17 in the past 200 years. 12 in 1964 after a 9.2 magnitude earthquake struck Alaska. Okay, not many, but how much is a life worth? There is nothing wrong with having a warning system in place, and people can do what they want if there is a warning.

So the government should stop giving tsunami warnings?

I never said that they should quit however I am of the opinion that perhaps they should reevaluate the criteria for issuing the warning otherwise they will continue to be a common enough warning that they will be disregarded much as tornado warnings tend to be around here and the end result is that a system that is designed to save people ends up being ignored and therefore hurting the ones that they were created to save.
This is like asking if tornadoes happen in this area. They have a large one at least once a year the last few years.
However we have watches and warnings almost every month.
Unfortunately because of this when a warning is issued the typical response is to go outside and Try to verify it.
Either that or it's business as usual since most people have no confidence in the warning system.
