No big deal??? In 2004, 227,898 people died when a tsunami struck areas surrounding The Indian Ocean. Those "1-3 foot waves" contain a lot of water.

Here is a video showing what happened 10 years ago in Japan. Do you have 11 minutes?

What does the Indian Ocean tsunami have to do with the west coast one? There are ZERO deaths on the west coast, and no damage. As I said, “no big deal.” Believe what you want to.

An underwater volcanic eruption has raised the possibility of a tsunami.

“If you are located in this coastal area, move off the beach and out of harbors and marinas,” the agency urged people along the West Coast. (National Weather Service)

Hi Jerry,
Here is what happened on the Big Island, not very far from my home here.

Potential. Everything is fine until it isn't. Every location around the circumference of the Pacific Ocean could potentially be hit by a devastating Tsunami or earthquake. This "Ring of Fire" has a lot of volcanic and seismic activity. I have one question for you. Were you on San Francisco for the earthquake in 1987? You know, the one that caused the upper deck of the Bay Bridge to collapse? The one that caused a major collapse of a freeway in Oakland, crushing many cars and people? The one that toppled buildings in the Marina District? That was a "baby" earthquake next to the one that occurred in 1906. Do people in the Bay Area live paranoid? I would say mostly not. On the other hand, to call the potential for a catastrophic natural disaster like a Tsunami "no big deal" is living in denial.

Yes, I was in San Francisco during the 1987 earthquake. That was a “big deal.” This recent tsunami wasn’t a “big deal” along the west coast. I’m sorry you don’t understand that. I wasn’t talking about the potential of a tsunami not being a big deal, and you know that.

OK. Sorry. Thanks for the clarification.

I live in Imperial Beach CA (Most southwesterly city in the continental USA) and it has become a joke about the signs on the East and West streets that have a sign about 3 blocks inland that say Tsunami danger zone. Been here 43 years and have never seen any tides that have gotten as far as 2nd St. One time during extreme high tides and a winter storm 40+ years ago the tide got a little over a block (300 or so feet) from the beach. Our biggest problem is the raw sewage coming from Mexico as it is currently.

Funny how folks who don’t live on the west coast are so quick to tell us how awful the tsunamis and earthquakes are here. And all the while hundreds of folks in their neck of the woods die each year due to weather/tornados.

One foot that you can see. The energy is under the surface. Ships don't need to worry about Tsunamis because of this. They might feel a bump when one passes. I remember watching that Tsunami in Japan where the water just kept rising and surging inland. I once read that they're found evidence of past Tsunamis in the coastal hills of California as high as 300 feet above sea level. I'm just going to guess that this is from finding stuff that's supposed to be in the ocean in a layer that high.

But it's the visible swell that is what surfers desire not the sub surface energy.

An east coast storm isn't going to affect those on the west coast, but a Pacific tsunami is.

Making a joke of tsunami warnings is why so many people have ignored the warnings and been killed by them. Forty-three years is nothing in Earth time. How much laughing would people do if a huge tsunami hit without any warning from the government?

Just how many people in California have been killed by a tsunami.
