I recently watched an interview with a professional photographer. Unfortunately, I didn't note who it was but my money would be placed on Daniel Milnor. The statement was made that beginners and beginning amateurs tend to focus on/discuss equipment. Advanced amateurs and professionals tend to focus on concepts/techniques. So, as the question was posed in the title, in which group are you?

I'm in Group 3.

I don't discuss what I have or want or why I have or want it; how I do what with what I have; or the best this or that.

I just take pictures.

I am glad Longshadow created group 3 because that is where I am!

I focus on the entertainment. You only live once, approximately anywho. Let’s guess that 80 to 90% purport to be in group 2. That means that the previous 3,000++ pages of this section mostly magically wrote themselves. Uh huh.

Since I've largely lost touch with the equipment that's being developed, I guess I'm in group 2.

I am a novice. I belong to a photography club at our retirement community. Most of the members have been taking photos for a long time and know a lot more than I do about every aspect of photography. I like to look for unexpected situations to photograph." Like this one. I was sitting with my wife having coffee at a local establishment when I told her "don't move" and took this photo. I used an editor to compose it and converted it to B&W. Nothing special, but the members liked it. Maybe they're just being kind. So what group am I in?

Two, but not sure how that could be if he is correct, because I am a long way from advanced.

Both, and I thoroughly enjoy both since each informs and enables the other. But what most interests me is what I am enchanted with and want to express with my images…equipment and technique/concept that I have spent time sorting out then enable that expression.

You're in a group that recognizes a photo op and knows how to take a good picture.

That's a nice shot.

You say you are a novice but maybe you are in #3?
(from my post on page 6):

"And I think there is a third group as well. That is the group that is knowledgeable, experienced, accomplished, in the art-form and they enjoy the activity for themselves without worrying about the technique/concepts or the equipment. Perhaps it is more of a “Zen” level, which means there are no levels, only acceptance of where we are, and continuing to learn. That is where I hope to be when I grow up."
