Need new printer

I have searched for Printers on this site but most comments are a number of years old. I have had a series of Canon printers that have lasted about 3 yrs before they became problematic (i.e. won’t print) and I get frustrated and just opt for a new printer. My uses are modest, mostly some labels, regular black letters, receipts, etc, and occasional greeting cards printed on Red River Glossy borderless. Given the longevity problem I seem to have I’d like to keep the cost under $200. Larger wall hangers I send out to be printed.

Epson Photo Stylus R380. 5 years old. Still running great. 5 color plus black. Not sure new price but on EBAY around $200.

After going thru HP & Epson printers we have 3 Brother printers. All are multi function and one is 6 years old. No problems.

I have a Brother multifunction, about the same age, works fine. One thing that drives me crazy is that they are set up so they will not print if a cartridge is empty. Other printers I have had could be set for monochrome. I live a good distance out in the country, and Murphy rules - whatever cartridge goes is the one out of stock in the cabinet.

My HP OfficeJet Pro turns 10 in a month. It has been essentially flawless over the years - until it stopped scanning direct to my Mac Mini a few months ago. (Apparently a problem for many HP scanners due to Apple software updates, including one I bought new yesterday thinking it would be more likely to work with the Mac, but didn't.) It still scans normally to a Windows box. Other than that, it's a pretty quick printer. And two sided printing, copying and scanning is VERY convenient the times when you need it. When the printer dies I'm very likely to replace it with a newer OfficeJet Pro.

I got a Canon G3260 tank printer in October for $200. Works well so far

I had a Canon printer. It lasted for ever. Had to get rid of it because I couldn't get ink for it anymore. Went with a brother but wouldn't use mine for photography.

A retired professional photographer friend of mine suggested to me, an Epson XP15000. He bought one and gives it very high marks.

I really like the Epson Eco Tank series. They may be more than $200 but you will make up that cost with the ink. I have over 3000 pages printed and have not used half the original ink supply.

Over the years I have used several printers. Obviously things have goon wrong with them or I would not have replaced them. Two things that I found, 1) that they will fail for too long a wait between being and used or the will fail after a large number of prints (where out). 2) The Canon and Epson seemed to be the better photo quality printers. That's my opinion, no facts.

I think your needs would be best served by an "all-in-one" type printer. You don't really need an expensive "photo" printer. I think the longevity issue you have is caused by your usage. Ink jet printers need to be exercised frequently to keep in operating condition. Even so they can get periodic nozzle plugs and require patience and several nozzle cleanings. My current printer is a refurbished Epson XP-950 "small-in-one" photo printer I bought from Epson for about $110 for 5 1/2 years ago. My previous Epson printer (which cost about the same) lasted about 15 years. I'm hoping this one doesn't last as long because I'd like to get a new larger format photo printer before I die. You could go for the "ecotank models which would break your budget but save lots on future ink purchases. You can go with Epson or Canon but whichever you choose you will need to exercise it regularly (like every few days up to a week).
