As I've said before, I like my Epson ET-2760 ink tank printer. The cost of ink is almost zero. My tanks are at about the halfway point after printing over 3,000 pages. I bought four bottles of ink or about $65.
I don't think an all-in-one printer will dp justice to a picture. You spend thousands in equipment and hours of time taking pictures. Then cut corners on the final step--- The Print!
A cheep B&W printer with a large black cartridge foe the general printing and a descent "PHOTO PRINTER"
"Occasional greeting cards" in the original post didn't seem like it would justify a separate photo printer. For most general purposes, the moderately priced all-in-ones are usually the ideal combination of function and price.
Every Epson printer had clogged heads (just after the warranty ended every time) so I move to Canon Pixma. I’ve never had a clogged head or any other problem with Canon.

Any particular Canon model?
I have a pair of Canon Pro 10s that get used heavily in December printing ~1000 pages for Christmas books for family members, and sit basically unused the rest of the year. Coming up on my fifth season, and I think I may have run a cleaning cycle on each of 'em once over the years - this using third party inks after the first season. Don't know if their head and ink technology carry over to smaller machines.
I also use HP and like the instant ink.
