The surest way to corrupt a novice is to explain the importance of shooting in RAW.

This is a very divisive forum. I would take everything with a grain of salt. Very strong opinions. I joined after many years of photography .. I do what works for me. Be yourself and do what works for you. If you are happy with your technique and photos that is all that matters.

Not as divisive as our country as a whole. We don't attack camera stores with clubs, spears, knives and guns. We, however, do get a little nasty with those with whom we disagree. Disagree agreeably, please. Just because somebody doesn't see things our way doesn't mean they are evil!

I think in a way this forum represents a microcosm of the nation as a whole, somewhat tribal.

Unfortunately, all too true. How and why did we get this way?

And look at the help they offer ...

shoot in RAW
shoot in Manual
buy a book on Exposure
your camera is the wrong brand
your camera doesn't have enough pixels
you're not a photographer if you don't own the most expensive camera
you're not a photographer if you edit in 8-bit
you can't succeed if your camera has a mirror

It's enough to make someone just use their phone ...

My daughter-in-law makes fantastic photos with her phone. Also great is that it's always with her.

I can't imagine what it's like to be new to photography. I've had cameras since I was about 10 years old. Back then, I bought film and pushed the shutter button. Today, a new photographer has to choose among various types of cameras and then figure out how to use it off "Auto." That's just the beginning. I used to ride my bike to the candy store to pick up my pictures after they were printed. Today, a new photographer has to decide what processing program to buy.

It's good that beginners have UHH to help them along the path.

I'm willing to bet the vast majority of newbies just use their phones.

It turns out our mothers were right... Avoid public conversations about religion, politics, money, sex, computers, cameras, and cars, or you'll reap what you sow!

Reminds me of an old joke. The young minister felt he was not doing well as a preacher and went to consult with an older man. He responded, "Avoid preaching on sex, politics, and religion and you will be quite successful,"

You forgot the most important one: You're not a photographer if your camera doesn't use a long white lens.

Back then to get good pictures you needed an eye for composition, location and subject not necessarily in that order

Jerry it is good to see you post something that makes us think back thru our days/years of progressing to our present state as a photographer. I am one who has passed thru sever "hobbies" at 84 I can speak from the experience of working into a new field with minimal $$ and a newbie amount of "Stuff" .
My experience with indoor, rimfire target shooting started my interdiction into "you have to have - bla, bla bla",
LG mouth Bass fishing - a spinning rod reel combo don't cut it-catches fish but not up to par, my deer, elk and bear hunting did not need a Weatherby magnum - I did move up from a 25/35 at age 14 when I downed my first Elk to a 308 at 17 -Dropped every thing I shot at from then on. Bought a used film SLR and joined a camera club at 54 and never was pressured to up grade - just learn to use my equipment better - With UHH it has been a fun road - learned so much and spent very little in learning so much in photography - I have a ton of "GAS" stuff that cost very little and turns out great works. My top camera is a Canon T3i and my top lens is a Tamron 18-200 IS/VR my kit for Macro is a lg collection of prime and zoom lens used in reverse which have given me images I never dreamed of.

I was typing using one finger (not both thumbs) and I couldn't be told fast enough (while in absolute hysterics) by a younger one that I, "type like an old man." haha
