Neil, go back and read everything up to his post. You will them see that his post is correct.
It is up to them. “Go big or go PHONE”.
There is a lot of good advice available including, for example, a local camera store or knowledge friends. Set some criteria first, including the following: 1) price, 2) type of photography, 3) importance of size & weight. Also, I would require any camera to include a viewfinder and a setting for RAW and/or JPEG.
IMHO, asking the correct question is most usually the best way to avoid emotion taking over the post
It is not uncommon to see young children using smartphones now. They are most likely the parent's phones however the kids use them like a pro. I often see toddlers playing with them as a means to keep them occupied while seated at the restaurant.
So, by the time they reach our age, they will have a camera device in their hand before they could walk.

This is a very divisive forum. I would take everything with a grain of salt. Very strong opinions. I joined after many years of photography .. I do what works for me. Be yourself and do what works for you. If you are happy with your technique and photos that is all that matters.
Nearly all forums on the Internet can be divisive at one point or another. Every user has a personal choice to make about whether to attack a stranger or respectfully state opinions.
It's far too easy to lob verbal grenades over the Internet fence. People say things here and on other sites that they would never say to their next door neighbors' faces.
It turns out our mothers were right... Avoid public conversations about religion, politics, money, sex, computers, cameras, and cars, or you'll reap what you sow!

None of those are correct…so why do you repeatedly proclaim the last one with your posts?

And more and more do. There are million of people to show them how their phone works. With the quality of the camera phones why not

buy a book on Exposure
your camera is the wrong brand
your camera doesn't have enough pixels
you're not a photographer if you don't own the most expensive camera
you're not a photographer if you edit in 8-bit
you can't succeed if your camera has a mirror
It's enough to make someone just use their phone ...
Since my Canon died, I've been using my Galaxy phone, it's pretty limited though, compared even to a good P&S. I hope to acquire a real camera next year, once I recover from the property tax bill!
