Well, it seems the image with the darker background (with some manner of editing applied) is the popular favorite, and I tend to agree. I accept that the background in #2 can be distracting, and I thank those who took the time to suggest appropriate edits to reduce the distractions present there. Thanks to everyone who posted, and I truly appreciate your input - helps me become more adept at conceiving and presenting my images. Keep clicking, mates!

I don't like the too dark BG. I don't like the very light BG.
I think that something in between would be great. Dark enough to not detract, but light enough to give a sense of place.
