I'm on the sweener vote. They both have merit on there own but we should pay closer attention to the locomotive.

I like the idea of blurring the background in #2 to accent the engine and reduce the "clutter" of the original background. I used a slightly different blur process than the one Rich suggested, but here's what I came up with...

It's magnificent

#1 gets my vote. No distraction and the back ground adds nothing to the image subject.

What's important to you about your image? If you're trying to portray the steam engine as a large, complicated mechanical device, then you need to emphasize that by whatever means you have at hand. I would darken the background a little more and lighten the rear of the engine a little to make that part stand out and see what that looks like. If it were my image, I wouldn't want viewers distracted and confused by the mechanical elements in the background that have nothing to do with the steam engine. They should be focused on the mechanical elements in the foreground.

Would love to see what you come up with - go right ahead!

OK, here is what I would do (see attached). It's like most of the other UHH members have said "somewhere in between". I used mostly dodge and burn on it.
You really do have an excellent photo.
I could see your photo taking a ribbon in a contest!

Depends on what you are imaging. If the steam tractor, leave the background dark; if the steam tractor in the context of its surrounding, then zoom way out and use the settings of the second image. As it is though the background in the second image detracts from the subject.

Number One because of more contrast and texture.

I like the darker background more. It helps accent the steam engine. The brighter background seems to detract from the engine, especially on the right.

Maybe try half as dark to see how that looks?

I'd go with the first version. It pulls the viewer's attention on the subject without the background distraction. It just has a bit more pop and drama :)

First one, Tommy. Background adds nothing and IMHO only subtracts.

I like the first image better. The background in #2 is too busy and detracts from the engine.

I thought UHH had scruples. Let's have compassion on the lady photographers who have to look at this woman who is so brazen to see other photos that are wonderful.

This photo is not appropriate for this audience. I'd rather be called a prude than to see this stuff.

I have been a funeral director and later an artist. I have seen more women than many doctors and I don't need this photo.

There is NO artistic value to a "spread" shot.
