Background? No background? Your thoughts...
I think each of these images has merit on its own, but I can't decide which I prefer - the one with the dark background, highlighting a kind of "steam punk" look to the steam engine, or a more visible background to give depth and context to the engine... please indicate WHY you prefer one over the other - I learn from your input...
I like the darker background more. It helps accent the steam engine. The brighter background seems to detract from the engine, especially on the right.
Maybe try half as dark to see how that looks?
I can agree with Longshadow about the accentuation of the engine in the darker image, but the lighter one provides a bit more detail of the engine. Therefore, I am in a state of confusion (a normal state for me).
There's more detail in the second one.
How about half-way in between dark and light for the background?
tommystrat,
I agree with Longshadow's comments exactly.
Arca
I agree with doing something in between.

No background. It is kind of messy and distracting to me.
I prefer the background image. Both are good.
The background, in this case, adds little to the main subject. I like the first far more than the second.

#1!!! for the colors, then with the shadows opened up a tad so you could see the entire engine.

Both are well done images. I personally like the first one with the darker background for the dramatic effects that lifts the image up to another level out of the usual and expected.
I prefer the darker background - focus is on the locomotive without distraction.
