If all pans out we are planning to go on a River cruise in April from Amsterdam to Basel. I have a Canon 80D with 2 kit lenses. 18-55 and 55-250. I also have a 50 mm a 10-22 and big 18-400. Don’t want to take the 400, too heavy. If you were to take one or two of the lenses above which would it be? 2nd question. If none of the above are decent, What would you buy if you had to take just one travel lens

The last time I was in Europe, I took one lens, an 85 mm. Worked for me! <g> Not sure what I'd take now, maybe that 18-55 and 55-250 combo since I already have those lens. I really don't use either lens much, mostly I use a 35mm and a 70-200 or 70-300 if I need reach. For some reason I don't shoot WA much so 35 is wide ehuf for me and also doubles as my normal. I have a 20 or 24mm in a drawer somewhere in my office and also a 50. Harry PS Since you seem to have plenty of $$, you might buy a 70-300 and a 35, 50 or 55. Or just a 70-300 to go with your 18-55. Not the reach of a 400mm but a bit more than a 250 and I don't find it heavy. Harry

If you prefer carrying only one lens, I would recommend a Canon 18-135mm for your trip. I have the USM version which is my "walk around" lens. This is a great multi-purpose lens which covers a good range of focal length. I understand that the 18-135mm STM version is also a very good lens. The 18-135mm USM lens can be purchased for as little as $400.00 used. A new copy is about $599.00. For travel, I will often bring my Canon SX50 bridge camera along for when I need the extra long 1200mm reach.

I second that suggestions. I'm a travel advisor with about 50 cruises and 20,000 photos in my collection. As I get older, I've lightened my load. I've just ordered the Apple iPhone 13 Pro Max to replace the iPhone 12 Pro Max. If you're with T-Mobile you can actually make about a $400 profit by trading at this time.

I love telephoto shooting for street scenes and wildlife so my other camera is a Sony RX10-M4 with a 24-600mm lens. I routinely get flawless 16x20's from it. Most important, the camera body/lens combo weighs slightly over 2 pounds and it is weather-proof.

I think weather-proofing and a viewfinder are "musts" for travel cameras. Probably half of the photos I've loved have been taken on rainy days, on super-bright beaches, or on racing sailboats or cruise ships with spray everywhere. Packed in a small gadget bag, the Sony + the iPhone + plus chargers, SD cards, a filter and lens hood + 3 batteries weighs less than 5 pounds.

When I go out shooting, I use o a COTTON SKOUT sling harness plus a thin camera strap for safety; I put the phone, an extra SD card, and battery in my pocket. That makes the "walking around" weight 4 pounds.

The iPhone/RX10 combo suits me wherever I may go. The new iPhones can even be used underwater and the "telephoto" lens on the iPhone 13 Pro Max is about a 70mm 1.8. It also has (like the 12) an impressive Night Mode and the 13 can take macros! The RX10 is unsurpassed for telephotos and when glare is a problem. Coupled together, they are a terrific combination.

Amazing prices for 18-135 USM on eBay:
https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_nkw=canon+18-135mm+lens+usm&_sacat=0&_sop=15
A little more risky than B&H, etc. but probably worth it.

We did a river cruise from Amsterdam to Budapest. 18-135 should be fine for most but I found my Tamron 18-400 a great all purpose lens and was able to get great shots from the ship. Fewer lenses the better. Enjoy.

I recently took a European river cruise and left all my heavy equipment home. I took my Lumix FZ200. with constint F2.8 and 24X zoom, with Leica lens, and my Canon Power Shot S120 as my pocket camera. Very, Very happy with the hundreds (thousands?) of images I captured.

Lol😂Your too funny. But I was thinking the same thing. Actually today I was looking at trading in my IPhone 8 for the 13 Pro. I do print out some of my photos and I a photography club I belong to has shows that I participate in. I also enter contests and have sold a few of my entries at a local festival. Photos that printed from my cell iPhone 8 quality was horrible. If I can get a good quality print for an 11x14 from the iPhone 13 then I just might do that. Something to look into.
Thanks for your input.
Bette

I’m a Nikon guy. So it would be Z6 with 24-200.

But I’d sneak my 14-30 into my pocket.

I did this trip from Basel to Amsterdam and absolutely loved it. I don't know Canon gear but can you get vibration or movement control because shooting from the top outside deck of the ship, you can feel the vibration of the ship's engines. When you're on the ground touring you can use wide angle. When on the ship shooting castles on the mountain ridges along the way, you need telephoto. Travel light.

We did an Amsterdam to Budapest River Cruise in 2019. I took 3 lenses and they worked out great. My 18-135mm was on my crop frame sensor camera 90% of the time, my 10-24mm on 5% of the time (narrow streets, inside cathedrals, etc) and my 55-200mm was on 5% of the time shooting (castles, cityscapes, and views along the river shores from our balcony and the sundeck of the ship. The 55-200mm stayed on the ship and was locked in the safe in our cabin when not being used. I will take the same on our next river cruise.

I have
The Canon 90d with the Tamron 18-400 lens and it works perfect for me. Also I am currently on a river cruise with it. Johneb2

I have an 18-400 and it stays on my camera. EOS 90D. Or leave them all at home and take a bridge camera. I’ve carried my Canon SX 70 many places. You could rent one.

Absolutely agree that a single “convenience” lens is preferable to the kit combo (Canon or Nikon) to avoid having to swap lenses. My only change to this recommendation would be to up the resolution to a higher resolution body (e.g., Z7) for cropping. A fast wide lens (zoom or prime) in the pocket great for interiors.
