If all pans out we are planning to go on a River cruise in April from Amsterdam to Basel. I have a Canon 80D with 2 kit lenses. 18-55 and 55-250. I also have a 50 mm a 10-22 and big 18-400. Don’t want to take the 400, too heavy. If you were to take one or two of the lenses above which would it be? 2nd question. If none of the above are decent, What would you buy if you had to take just one travel lens

You have already ruled out my recommendation the 18-400 that is my walk around lens. You will most likely be photographing both landscapes and zeroing in on interesting details. The 18-400 will allow this without the hassle of multiple lenses. I don’t know the weights of the 18-55 and 55-250, but I suspect that combined the out weight the 18-400. For a second lens I would choose the 10-22 to cover any sweeping landscapes.

It depends on the shooting you do and your requirements in a lens.
I too have the Canon 18-55 and 55-250 kit lenses, but I bought a Sigma 18-200 (pre model change).
The 18-200 lives on my camera. I also have the Canon 50mm ƒ1.4 for low light, but is equivalent to an 80mm on an APS-C camera. 95+% of my shooting is in daylight.
Of course I'm not shooting for NatGeo, but the Sigma works nicely for me.
(I took the 18-200 and the 50 to Iceland.)

(I'm sure you'll get a lot of other opinions... )

I think what you need to do until April is get to know your lenses, learn what each can and cannot do and how they fit in with your approach to photography. Once you get to know your lenses, the answer as to which of lenses you should bring on the trip will be obvious.

Amsterdam to Budapest 2009
Our 1st trip to Europe -- was shooting slide film with a Canon EOS 3 at the time
Lenses taken: 35mm, 85mm & 135mm -- Would take them all again but this time would also add a 24mm
Not at all recommending you go out & buy all new lenses -- BUT
Keep all the real heavy glass at home --
Go light!! OR as light, as you can
Wide-angle to no more than 250mm

I don't have a Canon, but the 80D seems to be a great camera. For travelling light I think I would buy a used Canon EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM Lens, (about GB£150). That gives you an FF equivalent FOV of 27-200 in one lens. Reviews are good.
If you are happy to take two lenses - stick with your 18-55 and 55-250.

Watch this review on the new IPhone 13 Pro and then decide if you want to lug all you camera equipment with you. Just something to think about. Another question, what are you going to do with your images that you take with your DSLR? Are you going to print out every single image you take or will the majority of them just find a home on your storage backup drives, never to see the light of day. My suggestion and I know I'm going to get clobbered here for making it, leave the big stuff home, take a small pocket camera and your Smartphone and enjoy your trip. :-)

I have gone on that trip with Viking. On those trips, rest assured, your taking too much. On River trips I never take a DSLR. I take my Sony HX99, Why you ask? I will tell you why.
The lens is a 24-750 mm Zeiss lens, I can print to 20X30 without issue.
The camera can shoot RAW.
The camera has a pop up viewfinder that is very accurate and easy to use.
The camera has a built in flash that automatically does auto fill flash.
The camera can fit into you pocket or belt pouch and leaves your hands free to hold your partners hand.
Trust me, I have been on 4 Viking river trips, you are taking too much.
TRAVEL LIGHT, TRAVEL RIGHT.

We were on a similar river cruise(Viking) from Budapest to Amsterdam. I had a Nikon D610 and 38-300MM lens and that be dat. I never wished I had another option or second-guessing myself.

You have been given good, logical suggestions above to travel light. I took the same cruise and took a full bag of gear. Why? Because playing with my camera stuff was half the fun of the trip. Each day I would pick out gear for what type of shooting I would encounter that day. I locked the rest in the safe in my quarters on the boat. Lucky for me, my wife doesn’t mind sticking an extra lens in her jacket pocket or tote bag! To each their own. Have fun!

We did that exact trip two years ago and I used my 24-120 lens constantly. I brought two cameras and had my 18-200 on the crop sensor body. Only used the two cameras together one day on an extended cruise past dozens of castles. Glad I had them both. I know it’s heavy, but I’d think hard about the 18-400. There were moments when the 400 would have been ideal. The range of photo ops argue for the flexibility of the 18-400, IMO.

10-22 and the 55-200.
With a crop sensor 10-22 will be just wide enough.

Force yourself to put up with the weight of the longer reach lens. On the river you will often find, during trip, that what you want to photograph is far away. You will come back happy that you had the 400 with you.

Have a GREAT trip.

I share the same opinion, FWIW.
