I use the photo editing app that comes from DXO and it has an excellent setting for removing noise. I has three levels of "removal" and does not do this automatically which I like.

Really, it depends on the complexity of the issue. I wrote these 'basics' instructional that apply to the LR and ACR. You can go down a rabbit's hole of several techniques in PS, but the consensus even in 2021, is dedicated software is needed above a certain ISO and the Adobe's software ability.

Basics of noise processing

I exposure thinking about the potential noise. For the most part, LR can can handle my needs alone. When not, I apply an initial processing in LR and then run the image through the old (discontinued) Topaz DeNoise6. Dedicated software are much better at removing noise and keeping details than Adobe, certainly faster than picking apart the image in layers in PS and processing individual layers separately.

For some time, I have had a trial version of the old Topaz Denoise 6. The trial period long since has expired, and it tells me so – but continues to work! I find it to be better in most instances than Topaz Denoise AI, and very nearly as good in others. It should be noted, as with any processing, absolute results will vary with different file characteristics – so there is no one program which will perform every operation best with every file.

I now have compared the new ON1 NoNoise, Topaz Denoise 6 and Topaz Denoise AI, of which I have a trial version (with watermark). So far, I find them equivalent – all very good – and better than anything else I have used. Fortunately, I very seldom have need for denoising software.

Until now the golden standard of noise removal has been Topaz Denoise. When they introduced AI into their software I began to have issues. In my case it was not as easy as it was before to get the results I wanted. When they decided to charge their customers every time they made an update I simply dropped them. I am still using their original version without AI but I will begin to explore the ON-1 version.
When I use high ISO and that is not common, I tend to expose to the right.

Topaz does not charge for each update. When I purchased DeNoise AI the first year's updates were free after that there is a modest annual to receive updates for all of the Topaz products I use (DeNoise, Sharpen and Gigapixel). I doubt that any software company provides free lifetime updates.

Noise needs not to be removed 95% of the time.

WE have a tendency to pixel peep and see noise all over the place but when we print the noise is diluted during the resizing/printing process.

Save your $$$$

Quite right... many times we just see the noise because our obsession about zooming in the image on our fancy magic screens.

A technique I found useful to save an otherwise good composition in which noise IS visible, is just adding *more* noise... Capture One Pro has a very interesting feature that emulates film grain which can add a very moody look to photos.

Use yesterday's photo by Doc Barry and do a real comparison with Topaz and On-1 noise removal. The question you brought up is not an opine preference thing it is something that should be addressed with Scientific Controlled Experimentation .... too often UHH is filled with nonsense which is more fun than dull definable scientific information. My often used negative comment... "to opine is divine."

opine meaning to express an opinion... opinions are often made of smoke and mirrors and smell of rotted onions.

From what I've heard, Topaz seems to have the edge, but look at some links.

DxO PhotoLab has a Prime denoise setting which is quite good, and a Deep Prime setting which many feel rivals Topaz, but Deep Prime only works on raw files.
ON1 has just released NoNoise a few days ago. It will be interesting to see side-to-side comparisons with Topaz.
Although Luminar has a denoise setting, it is not known at all for noise reduction and you should look elsewhere if noise reduction is your primary goal.

I use Topaz denoise AI and find its better than PS or Lightroom.

Topaz Denoise has been the gold standard, but On1 Just released NoNoise this week and as I have both, I was able to do a little comparison. I think NoNoise may be the new gold standard.

Can you post your comparison images?

So for noise removal, it doesn’t work any better than the PS sliders?

IMHO Topaz DeNoise is the best available noise reduction software. Use it as a plug-in in Photoshop or Lightroom
