Remember when you had an SLR film camera and you where forced to spend $10 every 36 exposures for film and developing? If you did not your were locked out of using that camera?
You failed to see the differences. With the 35mm SLR you can shoot all you want and it doesn't cost you a cent if you don't put film in it. If you put film in it, shoot and have it developed it cost you significant money even in the old days. More now.
With Adobe and you shoot 1000 frames a day it cost you about $20 a month. But... if you shoot nothing it still cost you $20 a month. And that is what I am paying now. I shot may be 100 shots in the last year or so.
So with digital it's like you have to shoot otherwise you waste your money. With film you don't waste your money on unworthy subjects.

I have been using pse 14 for years. I tried opening it earlier today and it said I had to sign in. I never had to do that before. I tried signing in but was informed my email and/or password weren't any good and to update the password. Did that but still wouldn't take it. I went to adobe's website - help center and got hold of somebody I could chat with and he told me that adobe doesn't support 14 any more and I will have to purchase the current version of pse or subscribe to photoshop and/or lightroom. That's not going to happen.
Does anybody have a recommendation for a photo editing program? I would appreciate the information.
Thank you.

What they told you is complete BS, I still use Ps CS6 with no problems on my Windows 10 PC daily. They just want you to spend more money. Find someone that knows how to fix your problem, likely a new update to your O/S. Unless you have a subscription version of Adobe software, it does not just stop working. Find a non-Adobe source of help. Sounds lame, but have you tried rebooting your PC?

Do you really expect a company to provide free lifetime support on a $70 software product? That's their way of weaning users off of old obsolete software. After all, they own the rights and you only purchased the permission to use their property.
I normally use PS and lightroom for my editing but I have PSE 14 loaded on a laptop and I don't have to sign in to use it. I think you need to call Adobe and get another technician, hopefully one that has a solution to your problem.
PSE 2021 is well worth the price because of all of the added features. Most of the time it is on sale for less than $99 list price. It is well worth the cost to get PS 2021
I am experienced photographer but not an experienced user of computers and software. Thus I shy away from a program more sophisticated than 'Photos' on my mac.
I've seen that there are many options for a more sophisticated post processing software than Photos but don't know which one is the more intuitive (read - not dependent on manuals) and thus easier to use.
There's Polarr, Affinity Photo, GIMP and ON-!. I don't know what I don't know. I don't want to load free 30 day downloads and become even more confused. The only operation that Photos cannot do for me (I believe) that I would want is altering /removing unwanted objects in a scene or lightening or darkening certain parts of a scene.
There must be the 'one' for me.
Thank you
unfortunately the new REALITY is that most applications are now SUBSCRIPTION only. You can no longer purchase a copy of the actual application.
YES. It is not cheap and you are a prisoner of ADOBE. That is the reality of it.
ADOBE has been this way for some time, and there is no getting around it. The subscription allows you to download and use any and all ADOBE applications but for 99% of individuals that is serious overkill and all that is needed are a couple to three applications. The rest is meaningless.
IF you need Photoshop, especially if you have older files you want to open and access, then you have to subscribe.
any other graphic application may not work to open older image files, and then you are stuck. If the older images or projects mean nothing to you then by all means look around for another graphic application, but it could very well mean closing the door on what you have already.

Besides Photoshop, Affinity and a couple of other editors I keep GIMP and DarkTable on my computer that is free and they can handle PSD files.

OMG after 14 years they updated the program!!! The nerve of those people.
You want a recommendation? You used PSE for 14 years, buy the new version.
Try ACDSee. I've been using it for years. I compared it with Lightroom and found it much better. It has just about everything that Lightroom has, as well as everything I've seen anyone use in Photoshop. If you don't need layers, which the Ultimate version has, you can go with the Pro version and save a little money. It's a one-time payment of $60 vs. $85 currently for Ultimate.
In my opinion, the best feature in ACDSee is the Light Equalizer tool. This can lighten or darken an image based on 9 sliders that range from very dark to very light. This is really equivalent to manipulating the response curve, but is much faster and more intuitive. It can be used over a whole photo or just parts of it, using a brush. I use it on probably 3/4 of my shots. There is also a similar facility based on color.
I am liking On1 Photo RAW 2021 a lot. You might give it a look.

I have PhotoShop Elements 12, and it still works fine. However, when I got a Hasselblad H2, I downloaded their software, which works fine with the Phase One back I have on the H2 (despite people saying I would have to buy Phase One software). The Hasselblad software (Phocus) is free and it also works with Canon, and I don't see much difference with PS. But I don't recall if Phocus requires registering the H2 camera... maybe they did. It was a 10 year old camera, but they still register owners. Of course, Hasselblad still services anything they ever made, software too, even second hand.
I never learned to do anything but the most elementary edits, so most of the software is wasted on me. I once made a gray sky blue, but I doubt I could do it again. I certainly won't subscribe to PS. The software you need depends on your software skills. The Canon software (free) is surprisingly good, people say, even with stacking and stitching.
Do they still sell Elements--or only subscription to the whole thing?
