Why is Adobe screwing with me?

I have been using pse 14 for years. I tried opening it earlier today and it said I had to sign in. I never had to do that before. I tried signing in but was informed my email and/or password weren't any good and to update the password. Did that but still wouldn't take it. I went to adobe's website - help center and got hold of somebody I could chat with and he told me that adobe doesn't support 14 any more and I will have to purchase the current version of pse or subscribe to photoshop and/or lightroom. That's not going to happen.
Does anybody have a recommendation for a photo editing program? I would appreciate the information.
Thank you.

I would highly recommend that you consider Affinity Photo. The price is right and it is a one time purchase. It is also a very capable program!

After that screwed up "Update" last spring windows and windows security started signing me out of things. I seem to have gotten it to stop doing it on everything but Office Outlook (email app) and instead of multiple times a day that is down to about 2-3 a week.

Do you really expect a company to provide free lifetime support on a $70 software product? That's their way of weaning users off of old obsolete software. After all, they own the rights and you only purchased the permission to use their property.

They use to do that several times. So simply do not buy their products. Lots of good software out there, depending on your processing needs and skils. No missing really many things with other good and cheaper software.
Much overrated program for the VAST majority of people anyway.
P.S. No need for the old good whining "every opinion" attackers to show up for a change. And yes, I only have 17 posts. Whats wrong with it?

Note the problem is likely Microsoft, not Adobe directly.

How does the sign-in problem impact your work in PSE-14? Are you using the editor alone or the organizer too? Just because you're prompted to sign-in, does that stop the software from working? If you start the editor directly, does that fill your needs? You can create a short-cut link to start the editor only. Is there an Adobe start-up process you can turn off so it doesn't prompt you to sign-in?

All the ideas above are relatively free, just with some investigation, consideration and set-up on your part. Certainly cheaper than buying any new software. Try the short-cut to the editor first, it should be program "PhotoshopElementsEditor.exe" inside your PSE software folder.

Another consideration is whether you have the software checking for updates. As Adobe advised, there are none to be had for PSE-14. Is the problem solved by turning off that feature?

Doesn't matter who or what, they'll find you and force a subscription down your throat. If they haven't already, it's just a matter of time.

I use photoshop and lightroom monthy at $9.95, updates automatic. IMHO, it is the best editing software available. You should try it.
Every company drops support on older products. It is a fact of life for most companies.

I just went back to a old computer and opened PSE 9. There were no issues using the program without signing in. Trying to access 'help' brought up help for much newer versions.

There is a discussion on the Adobe forum that indicates there is a single digit in the Win10 registry that can be updated that will restore full function to PSE-14.

A lot of things can be fixed by making changes to the Win10 registry, but if you are not familiar with it HANDS OFF!

You need to log-in to Adobe support at https://account.adobe.com/products. If you can't remember the password for the Adobe account you registered, reset your password and log-in. I just checked mine, and the information to re-install all of my Adobe products back to PSE 13 was there and available. PSE does check Serial #, Registered user, and the number of installs. A Windows update may have cleared the password information from PSE. You will need to re-establish it.

Gimp is an open source program that mirrors Photoshop and is free. It has the same difficult learning curve as PS so it almost requires you purchase their manual for 45.00. If you already are familiar with Photoshop tools etc. you most likely could do without the manual.
