You might offer the person $1800 for the D850 camera body. You didn't mention a lens, so $1800 would likely be a good buy. As others mentioned, 11,000 or so shutter releases are not very many. I would not give the person $2500 and neither will the camera store from whom he will buy the mirrorless camera. Take the other $700 and apply it towards a lens!

Just so everyone knows, "Photo Tech Repair Service, located just down the street from B&H in NYC will repair any camera/lens, regardless of origin, faster, and less expensively than Nikon. I too don't recommend a "grey camera," but if you get stuck with such an item, there is help.

Sorry to disagree with you. The D850 is not plastic, it's magnesium and a bit hefty. I own a D850 and two D800E that I keep in the studio. The issue with the D850 and other high end cameras is the strength of the camera - You can control almost everything including many things you never imagined. It is complicated and requires the investment of time and experience to begin to get the best results with it. But, if you want to use it with the factory default settings as a point-and-shoot, you can.

With top quality glass, you should be amazed by the improvements. The best of the older lenses are likely to be quite usable. Ones that you thought were good, will not be materially better, even with 45 MP images.

The D850 will winnow out photographers unwilling to invest in learning and those of lesser talent. To grow, you must strive to be better and learn this excellent tool's abilities.

I currently use a Nikon D750 and have been amazed by the photos I get. Recently, I have been presented with the opportunity to upgrade to a Nikon D850. Camera is from the original owner, who is upgrading to mirrorless, like new condition, 2 1/2 years old and 11,014 shots. Comes with original box and everything which came with it. Is this camera worth $2500? Certainly better than $2997 + tax for a new one. I know the choice is mine, just looking for some thoughts here. I do not see mirrorless as an option as I do not want to replace all my lens or have to use an adapter.

Thanks

I bought my D850 for $1600.00. Had 6287 clicks and all of the plastic stuff. Price might be a bit high. Perhaps the seller is hoping you will finance his move to mirrorless...

+1 on that. Bought two D850s for work (yes, we need them there) and was keeping one as backup.
Ended up never needing it, so far, and feeling totally comfortable going out on a field job with just the one body.

Of course, I do have an MF digital camera system in the car which I could fall back on should the D850 fail, but it's been over a hundred shoots and maybe 150k exposures with it now, and not a sign of failure. The second D850 is still basically unused in the equipment room.

"Plastic toy"? Are you kidding? I don't know where you get your information. I have shot with the D300, D800, and now use the D850. Anyone who thinks it is a "plastic toy" hasn't a clue what they are talking about. Or hasn't used the camera.

I suspect that term came about with the shift from an all-nagnesium alloy body in the D810 to a hybrid magnesium alloy/carbon fiber body in the D850. I had some concerns about that also, but after three years, it has turned out not to be a problem. By the way, I've not found any camera by any maker that has wi-fi ama/or Bluetooth that has a completely metal body. There's no way that a radio signal can get out from an antenna inside a metal container.

Yeah, I read that post calling the D850 a plastic toy, I chalked it up to individual having no clue as to what they were talking about.

I bought a refurbished D850 from Nikon last month for $2,199. It showed 0 shutter clicks, and it looks new to me.
