I currently use a Nikon D750 and have been amazed by the photos I get. Recently, I have been presented with the opportunity to upgrade to a Nikon D850. Camera is from the original owner, who is upgrading to mirrorless, like new condition, 2 1/2 years old and 11,014 shots. Comes with original box and everything which came with it. Is this camera worth $2500? Certainly better than $2997 + tax for a new one. I know the choice is mine, just looking for some thoughts here. I do not see mirrorless as an option as I do not want to replace all my lens or have to use an adapter.

Thanks

You need to confirm that the camera is a Nikon USA camera and not grey market (other countries). Nikon USA will refuse to supply parts or repair a grey market camera. - It is lightly used. But, I would have expected the price to be a bit lower for a 2.5 year old camera.

I agree. I have been reading review. Many people, some professionals, find the D850 a plastic toy and have returned the camera. i am most likely going to pass ............

That price is pretty much in line with the major used camera sellers, KEH, MPB, Roberts, but those sellers include a warranty that an individual does not, so do consider the value of that.

As Paul said, the grey market question is also crucially important. If it's not a US model it will be difficult to impossible to get repair work done.

I am not sure if this is a sarcastic answer...

In any case, the price is way too high, sorry. Same as a car, out of the parking lot (shop) and it loses at least 1/3 of its value. Basically anything above 2k is too much.

...11014 divided 2 1/2 years or 30 months = 367 photos a month...lightly used...Keh.com is selling them for that price...so if he went to Keh to try and sell it they were probably offering him less...ebay has them listed at about $2000...you have a D750 so it’s not like you need a camera...$2000 is where I would start...but that is just me...and in 6 months time he would probably be looking for it back...and you will probably be able to get between $800 to $1000 in return for you D750 if you decide to sell...bringing the cost of the D850 to around $1200....

Wow, hardly a "Plastic Toy".
It is an old tech camera but still a very strong, well built and professional quality camera.
$1,900 to $2,000 is a more common selling price, $2,500 is high for used.

Yep, my thoughts exactly. The owner of the D850 will not budge on price .... so I passed!
I will just continue along with my D750, which serves me well.

I too own the D750 and have been tempted by the lure of mirrorless, but I'm standing pat!

The 850 is not a "plastic toy". Far from it.

First...anyone who considers the D850 to be a "plastic toy" is either seriously misinformed, delusionally trying to justify buying something else, or just mentally off. That said, the price is too high from an individual, whether it's a US camera or not.

The fact that it is still working well after 2.5 years is a good sign, but these are incredibly complex systems. Mine had to go back to Nikon because the viewfinder masks quit working. I don't know of any independent shops who were qualified by Nikon to work on the D850 before they were shut off entirely, so it is important that it be a model that you could have serviced.

The D850 continues in demand and is selling reasonably well, holding its value better than most other models. I've also seen prices around $2500 from reputable used camera sellers, but that is with a warranty. I would buy a new one before paying that to an individual.

The D850 is a great camera...in no way is it old or obsolete, except in the minds of a few. But you need to look at what it can do compared to what your D750 can do and be sure it makes sense for you. If You don't see the value, that's a pretty good sign that it doesn't make sense for you. And look beyond just the resolution...there are lots of other differences.

The D850 is far from being a plastic toy. Nikon does not have a mirrorless yet to compete. There are two coming out later this year that may have more features and more megapixels but they aren't out yet. $2,000 is a fair price for a used one.
