Better out of the corner of your eye than in the middle of your windshield.

Distracted driving is an vocational and avocational hazard.

I had a wonderful time in the Palouse in summer 2019 (https://www.uglyhedgehog.com/t-603450-1.html). Get the Photograph America Newsletter Issue 54. It provides a description of the area. In the summer the two colleges nearby are out of session and either Pullman or Moscow has accommodations. The thread I included shows the view from Steptoe Butte. The falls and other attractions are worth seeing, but just the back roads with the sweep of the wheat is worth the trip.

Thank you very much, UTMike! I've been there many times for photo workshops, but could never remember where things were when I went by myself. Just downloaded PAN #54... :-)

Another nice drive is Skyline Drive a little north of Moscow.

Also check out Ken Carper Photography at https://www.kencarperphotos.com/ Ken and his wife Tanya are some of my college friends from WSU. They liked the area and decided to make their home there. Ken was an architecture major and has a good eye for photography; many of his photos feature the Palouse area in various seasons.

Remember, when you drive through Colfax it is a notorious speed trap. Drive the posted speed limit or less unless you like supporting the local economy and law. This has been the case for Colfax as long as I can remember and I learned to drive in the area in 1968. Just saying...

Palouse Falls is great if you can get closer to it. And not far away is a columnar basalt 'park' - columns of volcanic heated basalt rising from the depths of the earth, 8 sided, row upon row. Don't know if my late wife was 'allowed' to do it. She brought a large piece back from there for me and got it on the plane to NY. Still have this memento of a visit to her sister/brother-in-law. (BTW - stay alert for snakes!!!)

Thanks for the tip. I hate snakes.

Not sure if this belongs here or in the General Chit-chat section. Anyway, my wife and I will be spending 4 nights this summer in Pullman Washington. Paluse has always been on my bucket list and we aren't getting any younger! Anyway, I would appreciate tips, photo spots, etc. Yeah, I am doing google searches etc, but it's always good to get real world tips from people that's been there, done that, and here's what I discovered, etc.

Anybody live in the Palouse area?

If you didn't find the map of the Palouse yet, here is a link: https://palousepics.files.wordpress.com/2018/05/new-photography-hot-spots-on-the-palouse-map-5.pdf

I did several days in the Palouse back in 2014 and shared images here on UHH. Perhaps you might find some ideas to build on for your upcoming trip. You're in for a wonderful adventure!

I went to a workshop in The Palouse area. I flew into Spokane and drove south towards the area. I was absolutely astounded by the beauty there. I stopped all along the drive to photograph the beautiful landscapes. I am attaching my Flickr Palouse page and I think most photos are marked as to where they were taken. https://www.flickr.com/photos/peachesandolivia/albums/72157709928460142 There is also a very well-written pamphlet about photographing the area. I'm sure you'll find just what you're looking for.

I did not see where you may have mentioned the specific month you will be visiting. The Palouse, in all of its various shades of glorious green, will happen around the end of May and beginning of June. As summer approaches the wheat changes to a golden yellow. Sometime round the first of August the wheat should begin to be harvested. Most folks who go there to photograph the wheat fields do so at the end of spring. But I have always wanted to go there when the wheat is golden just before it is harvested. I think there would be some excellent photo opportunities. The locations that have been mentioned are the popular spots (particularly Steptoe Butte and Kamiak Butte). I like to aimlessly drive around on the dirt roads just to see what's around the next corner. Be aware, if you take that approach it will be dusty. Big time dusty. I posted some shots of the Palouse during late spring here on UHH a couple years ago. Should you be interested you can find them here. https://www.uglyhedgehog.com/t-539504-1.html

In early July you may find green fields and golden fields, depending on where you drive in the Palouse. It has been a long time ago when I made these images, I think the green was in June and the barley harvesting photo was in September.
