If you're not "evading the state and local laws about paying sales tax" since B&H gives a credit for the exact amount of the sales tax, then how are you paying the sales tax on the items you buy from them?

We can use diagrams and stick figures if it helps.

Sales tax is reported and paid by B&H to the respective state, in addition, they provide a credit to the customer for the same amount they reported AND sent to the state.

Any experience in the B&H Photo's PayBoo card? Is it a good idea to have/use one? What is the catch?

You can save a lot of money as long as you pay fully by due date. I've literally saved hundreds of dollars over the years. One caveat is you MUST pay in full or your interest rate is close to 30%

Since Tiny Tim uses it, I think he understands how it works. Maybe he is questioning the statement that one is "evading the state and local laws about paying sales tax". One is charged on the bill for the tax, so the choice of the word "evading" may be unfortunate. The credit card bank (Synchrony) and B&H just gives one a discount on purchase price equivalent to the sales tax. So there is no "evasion of the state and local laws about paying sales tax." However one words it, it works! And so far as I have heard there has been no challenge of the procedure.
As to people being surprised by the bill from Synchrony, they can set up alerts with Synchrony to let them know that they have to pay at a certain date. And as mentioned by several, one can pay electronically these days to shorten the time required to get the funds to Synchrony.

I interpreted his post the complete opposite of how you did

I know it's not "evading" any state tax. But thanks for trying to clear it up for me

B&H pays the sales tax out of the net profit they make on the sale. In effect, they are discounting the gross price (sales price plus state tax) of the item to you by the amount of the sales tax, and they are paying the amount of the tax to the state. You are saving the amount of the sales tax and the state is still getting their cut.

Exactly.

Not exactly true you are paying the tax. Payboo is crediting the exact same amount back to you. This is done at the time of sale. Look at your receipt. It has the tax on it and the Payboo credit on it.

Why does it matter who is paying the tax? The state is getting its due and you aren't paying it. And it's perfectly legal.

Excellent! When you use the card, you don't pay sales tax. For me, that means everything they sell is available at an 8% discount. B&H is now my first stop for anything electronic.

I remember the time when some of the box front stores had "No sales tax day". You could buy things on that day and the sales tax wasn't charged, presumably the stores paid the sales tax. That was when the sales tax was lower but seems to be the same idea.

There is a catch...
At least here in Washington State, the states that purchases made and not charged sales tax, the purchaser is required to file a USE TAX report and pay the sales tax. I suspect that this seldom happens but it is the law.
