At least here in Washington State, the states that purchases made and not charged sales tax, the purchaser is required to file a USE TAX report and pay the sales tax. I suspect that this seldom happens but it is the law.

Thats's the reason they started making online merchants collect sales tax on out of state purchases. Most people didn't bother to pay the use tax, and there was lax enforcement of it. Probably some people didn't even know they were required to pay it.

But the sales tax is paid! When you get charged, it shows up on your credit card charges, the price of the item plus the sales tax. And so you are charged the sales tax. The credit card company gives you a credit for the cost of the sales tax. It is like a credit card that gives you back a few percent.
Have you tried it?

I've had one since they started the program. No catch, works great for me. Just be sure you pay the balance in full each month as the interest rate is super high, as I recall, about 29.99%.

It doesn't for Florida (yet). And yes, tried it a couple weeks ago with an order.

B&H lists the following states which don't allow the Payboo offer: Alabama, District of Columbia, Indiana, Iowa, Nebraska, North Dakota, Vermont, West Virginia, and Wyoming. maybe they forgot Florida. And of course the offer is also no good for those who the Synchrony Bank doesn't deem worthy of having the card, even though they have good credit.

I meant, I wasn't charged sales tax. My apologies for the confusion.

Hmm, that puts you in an awkward position. I assume like other states Florida asks you to report purchases from other states and to pay the sales tax on them?

Not awkward at all. They haven't asked me anything

Florida does have a use tax which must be paid if you don't pay sales tax on out of state purchases. They're asking you to pay it in their tax codes. Most states don't have much enforcement on use tax, but if you ever get audited you could be in for a rude surprise.

Then maybe Florida hasn't asked B&H and other online sellers to collect their sales tax? Some states (ie. California) are much more aggressive about collecting their taxes.

The Supreme Court ruling gave the states the ability to make out of state retailers collect sales tax. It's up to the states to implement it.

If you use it, they instantly deduct the tax. The catch is, if you use that card and decide to not pay if full before the statement then you'll pay somewhere around 19% interest. That's a lot more than sales tax. So, nothing to worry about if you simply pay the bill in full before the due date.
