Paul, I like chatting with you and learning from you. While I started in 1976 when I was in high school I have learned so much from you, specifically as well as others here. When this Pandemic is cleared I would like to meet a few Hoggers simply so we can share some photography sessions and if you are up to it, some single malt whiskey and a nice cigar.

Wear your mask and wash your hands and we just might have a chance.

I might be disappointed that the brand went away, but that's life.
My stuff is NOT an investment, but simply tools.

Howard Johnson's restaurant went away, as well as Comp USA, Kodak, and a crap load of other companies I liked.
And there will be more to come unfortunately......

Not worried about it.
Can't do anything about is.

The problem is when you have lenses and accessories that are made only for <brand's> cameras it's unlikeiy you'll find a different brand that will accept those lenses and accessories. So, you're stuck with their cost as well as the cost of the new different camera.

I suppose that's not a problem if you're rich.

Another thing you can do is buy a used <brand> camera. Then who cares if <brand> goes out of business. No worries, right?

So you live with a few "common law" cameras? . . .

It is unfortunate that you narcissistic personality should take it like a direct attack on your choice of equipment. the world does not revolve around you and was in not way a personal attack on your fragile ego. Grow up!

Huh? That was quite a leap.

Funny you mentioned that. I tried injecting humor but the A-hole in me shines through every time. Kind of like glare spots when shooting towards the sun, it takes effort to avoid the effects, but it can happen anyway.

Yes, I do. I was able to get vaccinated as well. By the way, any particular whiskey and any brand cigar. Montecristo or Ashton?

I joined UHH to learn about photography and to get help for that subject when needed. I did not join to read more nasty comments directed at other users...no matter the “intelligence” behind the comment. Just survived four years of that stuff and do not need any more. Let’s just take pictures and let it go at that

How much do I love mirrorless? Let me count the ways:

Typically, in-body image stabilization (IBIS). All lenses, include legacy manual film lenses, now have IS support.

The exposure features of histograms and blinking highlight warnings can be displayed in the view finder during composition rather than being inspected from a test image.

The view finder can be zoomed by a factor of 10x to 'see' the details for focus, something DSLRs can do only on the rear LCD.

Images can be reviewed within the view finder, helpful in bright settings, where on a DSLR's LCD, many times you can't even see the LCD due to bright lights or glare.

Most brand-specific mount limits are removed, just get the correct adapter.

New and noticeably sharper lens designs specific to the mirrorless mount, as compared to adapted DSLR and legacy film lenses.

Depending on the old DSLR format vs the new mirrorless format, substantial reductions in size and weight can be achieved.

That's a compelling list!

I think that if you don’t have a lot of equipment, then mirrorless is the future. I use a Nikon DSLR and am perfectly happy with it. I bought it (used) because I have a lot of old Nikon gear. I also have a Fuji mirrorless system that is ok at best. I seriously doubt that Nikon will disappear but who knows. I have seen a lot of rude comments in this thread that are inappropriate IMHO.

It really doesn’t matter if the company goes bust or if they change their platform. I am happy with my cameras.
Just a word on a tangent:
While I don’t want to hijack this thread, I just want to let all know something that happened awhile back.
I was in my favorite store, B&H with my wife. I walked (perhaps ran) to the Hasselblad Station. I picked up a real beauty - a H4D-50. I was loving this camera and practically drooling on my shoes. My wife saw my reaction. My wife asked the price - $39,999. Her eyes grew wide and said, “put the camera down, step away from the counter and no one get’s hurt!”
I really don’t think it matters too much to favor a specific manufacturer. That is why I don’t listen to the B.S. and prefer to stay in the dark.

If you like a particular pastry and the store doesn’t have it, you can pick another one, you can go to another bakery store To get it or you can bake it yourself.

Thank you for the LOL. I hope you reminded her that drooling was free!

I dont know if it is dire warning or just conversation about camera companies and the industry in general. One theory I had not thought of was the idea that tech is so good, that the follow on generations of goods are not necessarily attractive or needed. For instance, desk top computers are not replaced as often as they once were because they are so robust that new tech in them is really only applicable to a small segment of gamers, etc. IE, I am using a 5 year old computer that is fast, reliable, etc. I don't need a new computer yet. And when I do, I will purchase one, having bypassed several generations of builds. I am kind of in that camp for photography. My Oly is older (OMD Em5mii) but it works quite well and is full of tech. I may not get a new camera for quite a while waiting for several generations of development.

This concept applies to other products as well...cars, tennis rackets, etc. The companies have to make the consumer desire, probably against their better judgement, a new widget, when their old one is still an exceptional piece of equipment. Is the 850 so much better than the 810 for hordes of people to abandon one for the other? Probably not. Reduced sales thanks to cell phones, pandemic, exceptional prior generations of equipment all make for a tough sales environment.

Anyhoo, it is simply a discussion amongst hobbyist who probably all hope that Nikon, Oly, Pentax and others do well to support our interest.

I do miss Comp USA - that's where I bought my very first DSLR, a Canon First Gen Rebel.

Stop picking on a good friend. Whether or not Paul supports Nikon or Canon it is not an issue with me. Whether any Hogger supports either camera platform is not my concern. I really enjoy being on the Hog because I have learned so much in my short time here and have met people who are talented from everywhere around the word.
Just because someone shoots Nikon like yourself is not my concern. I wish to get along with all here. Everyone here has an opinion about something but that is what makes us great in our craft.
Besides this is a forum for all of us to learn, share and grow. This is not a place to criticize everyone except ourselves. If you are not fond of someone, the Admin has made it possible to unfriend somebody.

Good friend goes both ways...and snarky a$$ comments indicate he’s not much interested in being a friend...just the arbiter of what hardware is worth having. Canons are fine...as is every other brand...and his claim that FF mirrorless Canon gear will automatically make good photos is beneath any common sense at all...I think he does it for entertainment value as nobody can always be a jerk without trying to be one.
