I have the "PEAK DESIGN" slide which is equally excellent for carrying, and well as it is for shooting when NOT using a tripod..However it can easily be fitted our to mount on an ARCA type gimbal!..The BEST strap I've ever used for my D500 married to a Tamron 150-600mm G2! It doesn't bounce around when cross chest carried while hiking, and ready in a flash when you need to hand-hold it for a shot!!

Different ones work for different people. Personally I like op-tec.

Yes, I see op-tec has a system using a sling and what op-tec calls "lens loop". It goes around the lens mount. This way there is no stress on the camera mount. Seems sensible to me and is looking like the winner in form, function, and price.

As far as camera straps I like the peak design so I can quickly remove the strap if I want

Thanks to all the hogs who took the time to give their advice and experience. Ya just can't beat the UHH members, well most of them, when it comes to helping.

One question you might think about is whether you ever use a tripod with your system, that is take it off the strap and put it onto a tripod. If so, how do you attach the lens/camera to the tripod? No matter what strap you get, there are different ways to attach to the strap and you should try to make it compatible with your tripod mount so you can rapidly release from the strap and put it on a tripod or vice versa (something I occasionally do).

Do any hogs have experience with a shoulder strap capable of handling a Nikon D500 attached to a Nikon 200-500 lens? What are your thoughts? Thanks for your help.

Decades back when I was playing a tenor saxophone, I had a macrame neck strap. It was very comfortable because it spread the weight. This was1967-68, the hippie era. A few years later I was having problems with my Canon F1 and 200mm zoom. I used the macrame neck strap and felt very little weight on my neck. I don’t know if any body makes them any more but it was comfortable and looked very different.

I have always considered shoulder or neck straps to be useful only to masochists who enjoyed having their chest or abdomen pounded by a camera. That is until I set about solving the very same problem you have. I settled on a combination of a Cotton carrier belt harness and a Peak Design adjustable strap The Cotton Carrier keeps the camera stabilized and the load can be shared by it and the strap. I mounted the Cotton Carrier lug on the lens foot to keep the load off of the camera body tripod attachment and keep the lens away from my leg. The camera is secure and both hands are free. At 84 I need the ability to use a monopod, walking stick or trekking poles for the extra stability when moving across uneven ground.

I own and have used just about all the straps mentioned, but the one that I've stuck with for the last several years is 4V Design's leather strap. Nothing fancy about it. It's a simple, classic leather shoulder strap that comes in several styles, colors and sizes, but it's main advantage is that it has a true non-slip pad that keeps the camera glued to your shoulder without digging in, thus avoiding the irritation that a day's worth of shooting leads to with so many other straps. It's definitely worth a look before you decide.

I have seen that advertised frequently as of late. I’m considering getting it. Do you have one and will it support a heavy camera load? I often have a Sigma 150-600 mounted on a Canon Rebel camera.

Thanks, uws. I will look into the Peak Design.

I’ve used the Black Rapid Sport for several years. It is my favorite strap ever for carrying a heavy rig.

I use the Black Rapid Sport as well. Be sure to connect the tether. I had mine come unscrewed twice in the first week I was using it. Fortunately no damage was done, but I have two tethers connected now and it hasn't come off.

I actually have my Black Rapid screwed into a RRS screw-knob clamp and the attachment is fixed into place with Loctite. My lenses have the Arca Rapid release grooves and then the clamp can be attached to the lens foot via the Arca Rapid release system. So far haven't had it come unscrewed (though probably should use the tether for safety).

I use Peak Design with that exact setup. I like it better than Black Rapid. Good luck with your decision.

Try a cotton carrier harness - secure and distributes weight - check it out at B&H
