In many areas the local AARP has a group that does income tax returns for free for anyone. My wife and I did it for a couple of years and the software program used is nationally recognized and the expertise of the councilors was amazing.
Many very experienced folks and a number of retired CPAs and such.
You can purchase Turbo Tax Deluxe at Costco right now for $29.95, if you need one state (which does not include state filing-its extra) then you can purchase it at Costco for $39.95. You won't find a better bargain than that and you get the CD to load on your computer assuming you have a cd drive.

For several years I have been using FreeTaxUsa.com
Very easy to use, free federal filing & nominal charge for state filing.

Inasmuch as it has been so long since I had to file taxes, I decided to look up the current pricing on TurboTax and TaxAct:
TurboTax Free –
Cost: $0 + $29.99 for each state return. (Federal + 1 State = $29.99)
TurboTax Deluxe –
Cost: $59.99 + $39.99 for each state return. (Federal + 1 State = $99.98)
TurboTax Premier –
Cost: $79.99 + $39.99 for each state return. (Federal + 1 State = $119.98)
f you’re a W-2 income earner you may qualify for the free version of TaxAct. The free file service also supports users with retirement income. Users can claim the Earned income tax credit, the child tax credit, and the Rebate Recovery Credit through TaxAct’s free tier.
TaxAct’s free tier is truly free. Users will pay $0 for Federal filing and $0 for state filing.
Plan -------- Free ----- Deluxe+ ---- Premier+ --- Self Employed+
Federal ------ $0 ------ $24.95 ------ $34.95 ------- $64.95
State -------- $0 ------ $44.95 ------ $44.95 ------- $44.95
Total Cost --- $0 ------ $69.90 ------ $79.90 ------ $109.90

I bought TurboTax Deluxe federal +state for $29.95 on Amazon ($39.95 including $10 Amazon gift card). I believe TurboTax also offers free filing for those with only W-2 income and no itemized deductions.

So what is the real monitized value of your personal financial information?
I am on High Sierra, too. TurboTax will not run on it, so H&R Block is the only alternative. With Apple’s latest xOS being 64-bit architecture H&R’s software will have to follow suit. It has been years since I filed by paper, but what is the alternative - spending big money for new Mac and lots of software (if you can find a shop that sells such).

I'm in the same boat. I have High Sierra OS for Mac and they want to require me to load up a more recent OS that is loaded with bugs. Isn't that thoughtful??
