I have a D500 and both DX and FX lenses. Just want to add a full frame body. Do BIF with the D500 & 200-500. Looking for the ability of full frame to provide higher resolution and better low light/ISO capability. Really just like fooling around with these fantastic cameras and their capabilities . Body weight is irrelevant to me. Not sure I would need the 45mp capability of the Z7

None of those ! ......If you are doing birds, do you realize the increased focal length you will need with FF in order to realize any IQ gains ?? If it were me, I would be using the Z50 with the 300 and 500 PF lenses or STAY with the D500.

I now own and will keep my D500!..However were I to venture into more landscape work, I'd go and add the FF D850 hands down!!..It's a bargain at today's pricing as well!

D850 and the rumor is that a D880 and D580 are in the works.

If it weren't for the price of the z lenses, I would go for one of the z II bodies. Nikon is at a point where Sony was a few years back - a great system, but not a lot of glass out there so buyers are at the mercy of Nikon lens prices. I am currently straddling the Nikon D750 and Sony a7iii systems as I need the 4k video, not sure where I'll land in the coming year, but I will not keep both systems.

I was in a somewhat similar situation in the Spring. I also have a D500 with the 200-500mm lens that I use to shoot wildlife. I was thinking about getting a D850 but went with the Z7 and I’m very happy with that decision. There is a little bit of a learning curve because the controls don’t exactly mirror my D500, but it still feels like I’m shooting a Nikon. What somebody on here called “crutches” I call very nice and useful features, especially IBIS and the ability to see the exposure. It removes the guesswork when using EC. The D500 with the 200-500 is still my go to wildlife rig, (except when I’m shooting from a kayak and use my Sony RX10MIV), but it’s the Z7 for just about everything else. I love the resolution for landscapes and macro, but the Z6 might be a better choice if you shoot a lot of high ISO work.

I would go with the Z6 II. I, too, have the D850 and the D500, the Z50, and the Z6. Will sell most of the DSLR gear including lenses to get the Z6 II. The quick focusing and the sharp lenses for it have sold me.

I would get the Nikon Z6II. 24 megapixels is more than enough and you'll have lower digital noise than with 45 megapixel bodies. It's an excellent camera and Nikon is focusing their efforts in developing Z-mount lenses right now. I don't know if there will be any more F-mount lenses released. I have a D500, D750, and D7500. I rented the Z6II for two weeks just recently. I will be purchasing one soon. I used it at a studio photo shoot recently. The face and eye detection autofocus worked great.

The first two photos here are not sharp because they are screen shots. I turned on "Show Focus Points" in Nikon Capture NX-D. I did this just to show the face and eye detection autofocus.

The third photo is not a screen shot.

The D850 will feel completely familiar to your D500. And yes, despite naysayers, an FX camera is an improvement over a DX - better detail capture, better low light performance, more cropping options, the ability to get the most out of the best optics, etc.

About 7 years ago I had a D300S as my main camera, with a D200 as a backup. I bought a D700 - even though it was 12 mp like the D300, the images were several orders of magnitude better for most of the reasons stated above - cropping was still somewhat limited. I liked the difference an FX camera brought to my images, so I ditched all of my DX stuff, and bought a used D3S - which, even by today's standards, has outstanding low light/high ISO performance.

I went on to get a D800 and a D810 - and discovered the concept of downsampling an image to 12 mp in order to tame the noise. My D810 has a noise characteristic of the D3S when I downsample the 36 mp image to 12 mp. With a D850's 45 mp, you can downsample even more, and crop to your heart's delight. One thing I did notice when I went from 12 mp to 36 mp - lenses that were ok with 12 mp all of a sudden turned to junk on 36 mp. I had borrowed a 28-300 from Nikon when I owned the D700 and while I was not particularly thrilled with it, I thought I could use it from time to time. I held off knowing I would soon be getting a D800 and I was sure glad I did - the lens was mostly awful on a 36 mp body - so I saved myself a few $$$ by waiting. The moral to the story is - be prepared to spend some $$$ if you want to get the most out of a high mp body. Otherwise stay below 24 mp and you'll have a few more lens options.

My thoughts and Nikon camera body ownership closely parallels Gene's. My main Nikon bodies are a D850 and D500 with lenses from 20mm to 500mm. Since most of may shooting is nature oriented, I see no benefit for me in purchasing right now any of the Nikon mirrorless bodies.

Z6 II gets my vote. I'm in the middle of going *all* Z but there're a couple of my bodies I'll keep; the D5 and the D500. The D5 is a no-brainer it's a Bill Hickock shooter, D500 because the Z50 is still too new to me, and maybe not up to the 500's capabilities. I love shooting *fast* and that's the only downside of the Z's so far, the infernal lag "waking up." I *kinda* solved that last time out with the Z6II shooting some surfing; I just kept tapping the trigger to keep it awake and that seemed to work. Other than that bugbear, I'm totally in love with the Z line...especially the glass.

I had a Nikon D750 when it was first released. But I wanted to jump on the bandwagon and gave the 750 up and sold it for a Fuji XT-1 in 2017. I didn’t like it after the first month but kept it until the 2019 Cyber Monday deal and repurchase a Nikon D750. It was too small, buttons would be pressed by mistake and I didn’t like the EVF.
To me the full frame DSLR feels like a camera. So needless to say, I would go with the Nikon D850.

IMHO, the D850 is the best overall camera made by Nikon. Best of luck.
