I have a D5, D810, and a Z50. I sold my D500 and my D7100 to gather together some funds to support the purchase of a Z6 II and a battery grip. Now, I'm hesitant to pull the trigger. I'm even considering a D850 instead. My little Z50 is a great travel camera - Yes, I have an FTZ adapter to use my F mount lenses with it, and have used it in a limited sports photography roll (Basketball last year).

I thought I would use the Z6 II for my sports photography along with my D5 - I know we have a few folks on this site that use their Z6 for sports; however, I have not heard very many comments on their success with the Z6. The Z6 II is an improved Z6. So, are the improvements such as dual EXPEED processors, dual card slots (one SD, & one CFexpress/XQD) and the cost of the new lenses worth the expenditure. Is there that much difference in the IQ. Those are the $64,000 questions.

Other things may be personal or subjective but IQ is no problem.

The camera is good for low light up to 5 stops, usable photos with ISO above 10,000, the Z camera have a higher dynamic range, I think the size of the mount allowing all that extra light in is worth upgrading in it's-self the possiblities are only increased. The Z lens reviews have been nothing but great on all the Z f.28 lens, even the Z f .4 is not without great reviews. 46 mp on the Z7II, touch screen, EVF showing actual image, great light capacities. newer tech, newest sensor, 2 processors, less weight and weather sealed not to mention high quality video.. DSLR are going the way of film cameras like it or not. change is coming. I got boxes of future paper weights. I ordered one today.

For sure ... sort of, I guess.

I’m using a Canon EOS R and it is fantastic. Using all my lenses and it is especially good in low light. You won’t be sorry with the Canon.

Don't hesitate to get the Z6 II. I was using one at a studio photo shoot recently. The face and eye detection autofocus was great for that.

The Z6 II is not going to do sports photography as well as your D5. That's one area where DSLR's like the D5 and D500 still rule.

I think the difference in IQ between mirrorless and DSLR's is not the camera but the new lenses that are coming out. I just read a review of the Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8 S lens for the Z cameras. It's the best 70-200mm lens ever made.

Maybe, maybe not. We will see how they hold up over time. I hope you are correct. But the one I used for a time did not convey to be particularly rugged.

He's right, buddy. I LOVE the build quality of *all* my Z's (I have four right now, looking to sell my Z6 because I upgraded)...compared to my other DSLR bodies (D5 and D800) they are right there!

...I own a Z6II and the 70-200. The combo is freaking great. AND, now that I've gotten used to the Z's focus tendencies, I've gotten super results. I'm not giving up my D5 because it still rules sports, but I have no qualms of putting my Z6II on the gimbal with my 200-500 and having a great time shooting anything. YMMV.

Hopefully we all have the gear that we prefer. Reasons could vary from IQ to weight / bulk or "make familiarity" or who knows what. I, personally, have been an EVF man for 12 years. I was so sold on EVF that I never expected OVF to last through that 12 years., which shows that most did not agree with me or were suspicious of the new technology. For most of those years, M4/3 was my only option, and so I learnt how to use it to best advantage. For me, those advantages outweighed the advantages of FF and APS-C. But each format has it's pros and cons. If we could all accept this, perhaps we could live in perfect harmony. I shall try to remember that we all make choices based, not on ignorance, but on preference. If I forget, please shoot me down accordingly. Keep safe.

One option is to sell your current Nikon lenses and buy the mirrorless kind. Also, find comparisons between Canon and Nikon mirrorless bodies and see what features you like or dislike.

It’s so great to hear about “preferences.” No right or wrong. Sometimes on UHH we tend to come across as “I’m right, you’re wrong”. We all make choices based on what we like.

I switched from Nikon to Fuji. I got X-Pro2 and my friend got the XT-3. We both like our camera and require hardly any learning curve.

Rent a Fuji XT 3 or 4. If you like it, buy an adaptor for your lenses.

Nikon has a 24-105mm Z mount lens coming out. It might be an f/2.8-4 or f/4 maximum aperture. I want to take a good look at that lens. It could be a good lens for studio photo shoots I attend.
