I am considering buying a mirrorless camera. I currently shoot Nikon.
The new Nikon mirrorless cameras have a different lens mount. Making all my lenses useless.

so I will look at the Nikon z5 and z7II

I read the new Canon mirrorless cameras use their same lens mount and
Canon lenses are def cheaper in price that a nikon lens.
Now that I am retired money is a lot more important than before.

but if you are using a mirrorless camera, what one are you using and how do you like it
and last but most important how is the picture quality compared to your old DSLR?

I have read reviews, I have talked to salesman . everyone has an agenda , as do some of you but I know i'll get some good answers.
Thanks

For the price you can get a very fine phone camera if you do a little research. Search the Phone Camera forum for some of my posts showing capability of a two year old mid-level phone. I'm suggesting a top level phone.

I believe they are sufficiently capable for all but the pixel peepers at a fraction of the cost and are infinitely more convenient. Plus you can show your images half way across the world in a instant.

I have an i-phone SE5 - but I don't take pics with it. However, isn't there a cost to send pics from an i-phone?

They still don't have a long lens to do wildlife well. I have seen pictures from both the Samsung S20 and the new iPhone 12. These cameras are really good however the ability to change depth of field is minor. They can't do moon shots with the same as my Tamron 160-600 with my 1.4 extender. When people want portraits they usually want professionals with a great portrait lens. A great all purpose lens isn't the same. For daily walk around my phone usually works fine.

Before you make a decision, I would do a literal plus/minus look. It might pay you to rent one for a week and then compare what you are getting with your current D810. I have an 810 and find it good enough for even the pictures that I sell. The 850 would be the uptick for me but frankly most of my stuff is well within the parameters for excellence in pictures 20x30 or smaller.

Another possiblity to consider is getting an older mirrorless such as the A7ii (now around £500 used) for use with you oldest adapted lenses while you keep your existing Nikon gear. this is the approach I took as my DSLRs weren't worth more than £200 used. There are a few occasions where the DSLR works best, but my A7ii comes out far more often.
The cost of this approach is considerably less than trading all your kit as long as you can avoid collecting native glass for your mirrorless body.

Yes. There are coin slots along the top edge. A nickel gets you 3mb if data.

After posting my query, I phoned a friend and posed the same question. He has to pay 40p per pic to send a pic onwards to another phone.

Hello!
As a long-time Fuji film fan, I was anxious to try one of their mirrorless "S" series digital cameras - I began with the 1000, which was very good, then I moved up to the 2940 with an 18X zoom, when I could afford it.
For the last 7 years, I used the SL300 with a 30X zoom and I am never disappointed. It's not too small or too big. The weight is perfect for my taste. The controls work with my arthritic fingers and the photos are marvelous! I bought the largest capacity batteries I could find and I have never run out of juice. I can't hold any camera still enough for zoom levels over 5 or so, so I almost always carry a tripod. And I use an auxiliary digital-compatible flash. I do some limited astrophotography, on very clear nights, using a 4X telephoto adaptor, so the total is about 120X - but I have never actually bothered to measure it... the Fuji also gets me into 1" or less macro zones. I still try to use a tripod in those circumstances.

I liked the Finepix SL300 so much, I ended up buying 3 of them... uh, don't tell my wife ;-)
Stay HEALTHY!

If you are considering to sell your Nikon D810 do yourself a favor and follow Attillo Ruffo on YOUTUBE. He shoots a D810 and his photos are amazing. Notice the number of hits that he has on YOUTUBE.

I purchased the Z5 to check mirrorless out and liked it. I have the Z7ii now and really like it. My reasons were weight and size as I am small and getting "up there" in age.

Do I miss my D850? Yes, It felt good and balanced and I trekked many a mile with it.

But I do not miss the weight and size.

My photos look just as sharp to me and the photo quality is very good.

I think the 850 was faster focus when shooting action. But with practice the Z7II may compare.

I use the FTZ adapter for my lenses while slowly buying the mirrorless versions.

Oh, stop it...if the OP wants to go mirrorless, just allow him to. We all have our reasons, biases, and favourites. We do not have to protect the aging FF mirror technology. It is on the verge of becoming the next “DoDo” bird, and we all know it.

We can still enjoy the old tech, because it is good, but there is a new age coming to photography, like it or not. We will all capitulate at one time or another, just as we are doing with electric cars and we did with the transition from film to the digital age so many years ago. We can already see the future with the two big guns heading in a different direction than the older technology.

For the record, I still use FF gear, and enjoy it under some circumstances, however, for many reasons, my mirrorless hardware is rapidly taking its place...

Wishing you all a very Merry Christmas!!!

Some people still write with these, even if they have a mirrorless camera. Go figure.

I remember the ink well in my elementary school building. By the time I was in sixth grade, the school system had taken them all out and then there was just a round hole in the top right corner of every desk. Great place to hide out army guys.
