I would appreciate input on what Mac laptop to purchase. I have always shied away from them but after my last Dell purchase less than 2 yrs ago and output of $1100.00 for upgrade of storage ect., I have decided not to get another as I have had it crash and repaired too many times this year.
Being a large frame camera photographer, I am interested in what model Mac you use or suggest.
Thanks for the input.

I have used MacBook Pros for years. They are unmatched in quality. Apple is a despicable Liberal Democrat schill so I just have to hold my nose when I buy their products.

Apple is supposedly going to announce new laptops November 10th with new chip architecture according to reliable news organizations. I use both windows and Macs. I find Macs much more reliable and have several lying around dating back to 1998 that still work (except for the batteries). I do not have any window’s laptops that have had that staying power. That being said none of the newer Apple laptops are upgradable internally and that includes ram and the ssd drives nor do they have dvd drives or sd card slots. I do have a 27” IMAC and the screen is great. If you are staying laptop get their 16 inch model or wait and see what shows up November 10th.

Call B&H and ask for a computer tech--who is also a photographer ( no necessarily a professional ) Tell them your situation, your thoughts, etc. and listen to their advice--- then ask the rest of your questions. The video card and some other small details are an issue and they will know what you should include installed inside your computer.
You then may wish to call Apple with the same questions--- and --make your decision------ you can return to B&H and purchase, etc.......

I use a 27" Mac and my wife has a Macbook Pro. Both computers will be five years old in a few months. The hard disc part of my fusion drive died last month but I was able to operate off a full backup. I had the drive replaced at the Apple Store and was back in action in a couple of days. I've learned that once one part fails the others may be following soon so I'm waiting for the new Macs before I replace the current one.

One other thing, the Apple people told me that other than seeing some "retention" around the edge of my screen there seems to be nothing else wrong at this time.

My past experience with Windows PCs has been one of frustration with failing parts that seem to go in an orchestrated procession. When after a few years my Dell started sucking money out of my pocket I decided to try a Mac and have never had a real problem since.

I love my MacBook Pro. I’ve never had a problem with it. I store all my raw files on my external drive.

I have preferred Macs for years. Reliability, no antivirus programs, and usually get 5 - 6 years service, if you want a desktop get the 27” iMac with i9 processor, at least 16GB, 1TB SSD drive (I don’t like the fusion drive), graphics card with at least 8GB. If portable get the 16” MacBook Pro with i9 processor, at least 16GB, 1TB SSD drive, graphics card with 8GB. Note ram in the MacBook Pro cannot be upgraded, more ram is alway good.

only a Mac Pro. I have a 2013 that is still going strong. You get a lot more for your money in a desk top than a MacBook. I take 1000 raw pictures a day and need lots of power. the pro is simply the best computer on the market I use two screens I run photoshop and have had every upgrade for 20 years now 2021. buy every thing for speed, at least 32 g of ram. You can get this in a 27 in IMac but I like having the HD underneath. The new computer I want is about $11,000 lots of money but no sitting around waiting.
There is one problem My Mac will not open the CR3 (raw) image. I look at them in photoshop or Canon pro.

I use a MacBook Pro, expensive yes, but I have not had one single problem with this computer in 5 years. Not to mention with the whole Apple ecosytem -- Iphone and Ipad all works seamlessly together and everything is shared.

No muss, no fuss. I have 32GB of Ram and 1 TB hard drive and use Luminar for post processing.

I use a Mac Mini. I already had a large monitor and got more bang for my buck by not buying another screen. Also easier to replace if the the screen goes. 2012 model still running no problems, I upgraded the memory myself which you can't do on the laptops. For portable use I have a MacBook Air 2014 with no problems.

Also look at Apple web site for refurbished. They have a one year warranty and just like new.

Suggestion: Ryzen 5; 3600; 32 GB Ram; 512 GB ssd Hard Drive and lastly a GTX 1660 graphics card. This is what Robin Wong recommended.

I have a MacBook Pro, since 2014. Works great, never any problems. When I upgrade it will be another Mac.

Budget?

Wait for the new Apple Silicon Macs to be released on 11/10/20. Then you can evaluate fairly whether you want Intel (dead end about five years away for Mac users) or Apple Silicon (promising but untested future of Macs).

I have never found the need for a laptop, but that is my work flow. I hate laptop keyboards and finger pads, and weenie screen ... i have two 26" Mac Cinema displays that work in tandem... But with a laptop, you can dock it easily, and hook into large screen or screens., and add ext hard drives, a mouse and regular keyboard... when at your desk... and you do have the portability as well.

When I need a computer or my lap, for the web, stuff etc... i use my iPad. The iPhone, iPad & Mac desktop all sync info and work together.. ie i can answer calls through my computer, or iPad or phone- using the phone's cell, info added in one, contacts etc. show up on all. Texts come in on all three.

So welcome to the Mac system. Where anything you think should work...already does.
