When people view the shot and you receive praise for being such a great photographer how many of you admit that the wonderful sky is a fake one???

back in the old days of black and white I would print reversals simulating night and add the moon. Photography can be art, it is not always recording an event or scene. Most of us will tweak the exposure for the blacks or whites. I have no issue with adding a sky. We do not always have the days to get the perfect weather. I have cloned out power lines. Some photographers clone out people, trash cans and other items

Luminar and PS 21 can now do sky replacement. Don't get me wrong, I sometimes massage my photos a lot by cropping, using spot repair, cloning out small unwanted bits, adjust exposure, and sometimes add a little saturation. But sky replacement to me seems like too much. Do you still call it a photo after you replace the sky? Do you enter it in a contest without saying anything. Do you accept compliments without saying anything? Not trying to be a purist, but when you start adding and replacing items in a photo, it seems to me it is no longer a photo. It's probably photo art. Not trying to start a fight, just interested in your perspective.

I agree with you!

Unless they explicitly ask or comment about the sky, I'll say nothing as they are commenting about the overall image.

I agree with the lorvey and most of the responses . It stops being a photo and becomes art. The composition of the people on the beach is just plain gross. and slickening.

wow, that sky replacement took an ordinary photo into a ‘stunner’. However, I have been fortunate to shoot photos in both landscapes and cityscapes with the most dramatic skies. Yes, I get up early! Capturing these in the camera only makes me a better photographer, creating a sky that wasn’t there makes me a better graphic artist and computer operator. I don’t care what others do. As the French say ‘chacon a son gout’ or each to their own taste. I teach photography and look at my student’s original photos for their qualities of exposure and composition. I don’t care if they radically change the photo with post processing but only after I see an image in its original form.

I think its OK to import parts for your picture as long as when you sign your name on the picture to add the name of the software you used so they get some credit . Such as Tom Jones and Adobe .

It's simply a composite of two (or more) photos.
Still a photo.
But some people like to keep images a virgin, no "adulteration".

If it looks better/more interesting, what's the problem?

Photo+photo=photo.

But then it is a personal choice/belief.

Sky replacement would be a bridge too far for me, but it's a matter of personal taste. I admit to being a purist. Eventually Photoshop will have Full Photo Replacement. With the FPR feature enabled, your crappy backyard snapshot will morph into a jaw-droppingly gorgeous image of your family created by an algorithm duplicating the style and talent of Arnold Newman or 20 other legendary portrait photographers.

I enjoy both formats and love seeing some of the composites in comps etc. BUT I do think, as technology is so sophisciated now, there should be a separate section for composites, fine art etc etc. it would make life so much easier for us who are not really capable of the very advanced stuff in PS and all the other programmes etc.

You refuted your own position by admitting the things you do to enhance your photos.

I will add ... to some degree - upon capture, dodge and burn, crop, tone to full blown post-process enhancement.

Great comment! Loved it. The scary thing is that you are probably accurately predicting the future.

Re: sky replacement.
If you enjoy using AI sky replacement introduced in Luminar ... my first look at PS AI sky replacement highlights Adobe went well beyond Luminar.

Changing the sky is just fine...especially if you use your own. Just because there was a crummy sky the one day you were in Yellowstone doesn’t mean that there are lots of great sky days at Yellowstone. Same with cloning out a fence post or piece of trash.

For a contest...follow whatever rules they established. Putting in a sky that makes a better photo is fine...if it is allowed...just like any other PP.

There have been numerous threads on this subject...and nobody ever changed their minds about the subject.
