I don't know what an "S" series lens is but the D5100 manual has a list of Nikon lenses and how they work with it. You can use essentially any Nikon lens with it (some exceptions for VERY old ones) but since the D5100 does not have focusing motor in the camera body only newer lenses with the focusing motor in the body will autofocus on it. That's what you need to look for.

Unless they are going to discontinue the D5xxx it has to happen soon. The sensor they put in the D3200 matches the low light peformance of the one in the D5100/7000 but outdoes them with 24MP vs. 16.3MP. They can't charge more for a less capable camera.

More MP are important to me because I do wildlife that often demands singnificant cropping. It won't matter to most people. But I've decided to go with the D7000 upgrade (D7100?) because I want the weather protection and a few of the other features the D7000 offers over the D5100. I consider the D5100 experience invaluable to be ready for it. All my lenses will work with it too.

The D7100 may be first because it is an older release than the D5100. I have already willed my D5100 to my wife who wants to get a Micro (Nikon's name for Macro) lens for it. She's looking forward to me getting a new camera. (Ha Ha!)

BTW the in-camera HDR works pretty well.

The in-camera HDR has been my one disappointment with it. I find the Active D-lighting usually does a better job. Perhaps it is because of the subjects I have tried it on.

Also I'm moving to shooting in RAW and the HDR does not work with RAW. Heads up on that!

There are subjects, mainly scenics that I have tried 3 different techniques on. I've put my camera on a tripod and tried several subjects with a grad ND filter (my old film standby) Active D and in camera HDR (Auto). Some subjects seem better with one technique than the others but I have yet to determine when to use which. I've had good luck with all three.

I believe jjadeco25 means an AF-S lens which works in the D5100. (Auto Focus Silentwave motor in the lens ) And most all other Nikkor lenses will work in the D5100, they just may not meter or autofocus. So you will have to do it manually.

I've had mine for about 2 weeks, now.
This is my first DSLR, and couldn't be happier with it.
Bought a refurb (392 clicks on the shutter) from Cameta with the 18-55 kit lense.
Reading all of the less than favorable comments about the kit lens, I had my doubts about getting it, but I just wanted something cheap to practice with and get to know the camera, before investing in higher quality lens'.
So, I went ahead and ordered it, and I find that it exceeded my expectations.

This photo was taken with the 18-55 at approx 3 feet, with a tripod, spot focus on the eye, then cropped.

Fab shot.....! In the UK (and I guess it is the same in the USA) people always seem to underestimate the 'kit lens'. I think in fairness, most lenses these days provide excellent results and yes if you are paying four figures for a lens, you have the right to expect it to be superb. I consider the 18 - 55mm lens on my Sony to be good and only last week invested in a secondhand Sigma 28 - 105mm f2.8 for the princley sum of £75 (roughly $100 I think), just to have that bit more speed. Your shot is excellent, your lens is excellent, show us some more...... ;)

been looking and checking the photos , remarks and what all have said about the Nikon d5100 . Well, I have the order in and can't wait . Seems that every-time I went into BestBuy I'd play with it more and more so I finally took the plunge .
I tried to order from the local Camera store but they would only sell me the Body with the kit lens , 18 to 55mm . I went online and noticed Walmart had it for $496.** , body only . The Camera store had a sign in-front of this camera that was $649.** . . I can't do that so I bought from Walmart ! I really like supporting our local stores but when they are so high in price sometimes we have to go else ware.

Make sure whatever lens you get for the D5100, that it is an "AF-S". That was the mistake I made. My favorite lens was only an "AF" & wouldn't autofocus... they took the autofocus motor out of the camera... now it has to be in the lens itself to focus (and my poor old eyes wouldn't let me do a good job manual focusing... drat!!)

tg1911 what a nice shot with your 18-55mm lens!! Nice detail and crispy!! I am looking into purchasing the canon t3i . Did you ever consider this one and why the nikon. Not that the nikon is not an excellent camera, but since i have the canon sx40 and am use to the canon interface(menu) i chose the canon.

Thank you, redfordl.
I also checked out some Canons, but the main reason I chose the Nikon was the feel.
The way it fit my hand just felt natural.
Also, the menu setup seemed more instinctive, to me.

I am not familiar with this camera, but I do have something to say about where you purchase it. Your local camera store has a great deal of information once you have bought a camera. To me it is worth the extra money for the support I get.
