been looking and checking the photos , remarks and what all have said about the Nikon d5100 . Well, I have the order in and can't wait . Seems that every-time I went into BestBuy I'd play with it more and more so I finally took the plunge .
I tried to order from the local Camera store but they would only sell me the Body with the kit lens , 18 to 55mm . I went online and noticed Walmart had it for $496.** , body only . The Camera store had a sign in-front of this camera that was $649.** . . I can't do that so I bought from Walmart ! I really like supporting our local stores but when they are so high in price sometimes we have to go else ware.

My local camera store is like that. He generally charges $100 over list price.

WOW for that price I'd pick up another one just to have as a backup.

Jerry . . I tried making a deal with the local camera store but they wouldn't even consider a deal - I've met others that have said the same about them but I tried ~

To those who may think poorly of Walmart:
Don't forget, they ARE one of the largest employers in the U.S.

I have found my D5100 to be quite a joy. But at first I found it somewhat intimidating. It has many options and features. It was my first DSLR...although I shot a SLR with film for 30 years and other digital cameras before it I hadn't gotten into the auotmated stuff.

KenRockwell.com has a nice introduction you might want to check. Kelby.com has one also that I was able to view as free trial. David Bush's book is good too. I keep the digital manual on my computer and now nearly a year later still find myself looking things up to learn more detail about how they work. I am completely comfortable with it now but always trying to extend my use of it.

My local guy gets a few of each model, and he knows he'll be able to sell them at his top price, so he just waits.

Well congrats! I am waiting to get myself one as well. I'm hoping there will be a little break in price as we get closer to Christmas and then I can get it. If I only needed the body I would be jumping all over the Walmart offer too.

Nikon reduced the D5100 price $100 a couple of months ago. That is a sign that the replacement model is soon to arrive. They have to do it soon because the lower model D3200 now has a better sensor.

That said they continue to push the D3100 so I don't know when you won't be able to buy new D5100s any more.

I've had mine for about 2 weeks, now.
This is my first DSLR, and couldn't be happier with it.
Bought a refurb (392 clicks on the shutter) from Cameta with the 18-55 kit lense.
Reading all of the less than favorable comments about the kit lens, I had my doubts about getting it, but I just wanted something cheap to practice with and get to know the camera, before investing in higher quality lens'.
So, I went ahead and ordered it, and I find that it exceeded my expectations.

This photo was taken with the 18-55 at approx 3 feet, with a tripod, spot focus on the eye, then cropped.

IMHO the 18-55mm lens is fine.

wow, a good response , thanks everyone. I have the Nikon dx 35mm1.8 (( love the clarity and color )) ,, Nikon dx18-105mm 3.5 ed,, and the Nikon ed 70-300mm 4.5 ! The 18-105 is the one I mostly use . I do the photos at the Senior Center and find the best one is 18-105 ~ otherwise I'm in there face or have to get far away to get pictures .
I've been waiting ,thinking something new is coming but just don't seem to think a replacement is coming soon so thats why I ordered now. And I have the money now too !
again , thanks for all who replied .
