Why do we have a Post Office and a Postal Service?
I've been told they are two different entities.

This was a manufactured emergency so the Post Office could be privatized.
FYI:
In 2006, Congress passed a law that imposed extraordinary costs on the U.S. Postal Service. The Postal Accountability and Enhancement Act (PAEA) required the USPS to create a $72 billion fund to pay for the cost of its post-retirement health care costs, 75 years into the future. This burden applies to no other federal agency or private corporation.
If the costs of this retiree health care mandate were removed from the USPS financial statements, the Post Office would have reported operating profits in each of the last six years. This extraordinary mandate created a financial “crisis” that has been used to justify harmful service cuts and even calls for postal privatization. Additional cuts in service and privatization would be devastating for millions of postal workers and customers.
In its December 2018 report, President Trump’s Task Force on the United States Postal Service reaffirmed current rules related to postal retiree health benefits, calling it “part of a mandate for postal self-sustainability.” However, the Task Force also recognized that the aggressive and accelerated timetable for funding the mandate has proved unworkable. They call for past deficits to be “restructured with the payments re-amortized with new actuarial calculation based on the population of employees at or near retirement age.”
This was a manufactured emergency so the Post Offi... (show quote)

👍👍👍 I agree completely!

"If the costs of this retiree health care mandate were removed from the USPS financial statements, the Post Office would have reported operating profits in each of the last six years." That is patently not true if you were to take into account underfunded retirement costs...

This is a current happening, as in now!! Not 2015, the performance was adequate (I do feel for anyone who loses their job through circumstances they didn't create - been there myself) until the current shutdowns. Distribution centers change with the population and demographic changes "generally", as it is about need, flow and profitability.
As for now - They were all about giving away several trillion dollars to big business (many that deserved nothing), but couldn't spend a couple billion to right the PO. The FED hasn't done right by the PO in some time....problem is, EVERYBODY suffers.

Those were loans meant to be paid back by those companies. In the case of a Federal entity, the taxpayers would be on the hook

Inappropriate comment.

Why should someone be after a Pentax user??

Actually, may not have applied the first time either - wanting to know if mail service has been affected is a reasonable question.

I've gotten nine packages in the last ten days with no problems. Everyone wants to make this into a "hate trump" issue but my source at the local post office says that's just a bunch of hooey. He says this maintenance is normal and already scheduled.

The Head of USPS said this was a new effort to save money.

Hearing more than one story sounds like hooey to most of us,

Having a story change over time is also not good.
Stick to one, preferably the truth.

One example I can share is a letter last week that the insurance company had dated 7/27/2020 and I received it on either 8/14 or 8/15. The main concern was a renewal option that had to be back to the insurance company by 8/17. Fortunately I had decided to stay with the original plan so the late delivery turned out okay.

Saving on postal costs has us doing all of our financial business on the respective companies websites. We no longer mail much of anything except parcels...Mostly all we get are parcels and junk mail...

Maybe you don’t - I use USPS a lot for out-going mail.

Unfortunately there is a lot of untruth being spread around these days for political gain. Everything from various aspects of the pandemic to the Post Office has been exploited by both sides.

I have relatives and friends in the Postal Service and I used to make some of the sorting equipment they use.

The Postal Service needs a total restructuring. The overly burdensome retirement funding is one problem, but they also have major management and HR issues throughout the organization. There are many people working in the Post Office that are worked half to death while many others do a fraction of the work at the same or higher pay. The timing of this restructuring was not the best, but it does need to happen.

The sorting equipment they are retiring sorts first class mail only, not Ballots or packages. First class mail is less than 50% of what it was 5 years ago. The equipment is simply not needed anymore, yet costs a great deal just to maintain. It is not something you can just turn off and then just turn back on if/when you need it.

Removing little or not used boxes has been happening for years. My own old neighborhood lost our individual mailboxes to a cluster placed at the entrance of the neighborhood over 20 years ago.

Using the Post Office changes as a means to get attention for the terrible way many states are handling voting this year was wrong, but that doesn't mean that just sending out ballots without any way to confirm the correct person gets and uses them is Ok; it is crazy. That also goes for not having to show an ID to vote. You need an ID to get into many buildings, to get State/Federal assistance and many others things that are less important than voting. You can't even sign up your kid for sports or enrol them in school without ID.

USPS took possession of a package I mailed to Florida on Aug. 5th. According to tracking it arrived in the Memphis Distribution Center on the 15th. Keep in mind from my home in Alabama it's only a 2 1/2 hr. drive to Memphis. They must have walked it there. Aug. 16th. tracking has the package in their Jacksonville Fl. distribution center. The last message Aug. 20th claims the package is in Transit, Arriving Late
Your package will arrive later than expected, but is still on its way. It is currently in transit to the next facility. So, yes we don't know the story but have to either put up with this bad service or look to UPS, Fedex, etc. I filed a complaint with USPS but you know how that goes. Looks like USPS is getting out of package delivery to me, voluntarily or not.

Major problems. Package tracking and persistent late delivery of daily business newspapers, shows that the local substation is only 'working' about 2-3 days/week. Often the station has packages for 2-3 days before it puts it in the PO Box.
