The USPS has been operating in the red for a long time. Losing billions of dollars per year. But they have a monopoly on first class mail, so I often wonder why they don't just charge what it takes to break even. They have a strange relationship to the federal government. They basically have to stay solvent on their own but the federal government keeps leveraging requirements on them that cost a lot of money. Then every once in awhile, the Fed offers them a few tidbits, like recently something to help with the pandemic. Back when they had a near monopoly on every form of mail except for Rail Express, they did alright. But now people have all sorts of ways to bypass USPS. Email, Facebook, and a host of similar ways to communicate with family and friends. Bills are now mostly paid by direct withdrawal from your bank account. Packages are mostly delivered by UPS, FedEx, and DHL. Their only exclusive delivery is first class mail. Not a good business model! Maybe it is time to bring them into the Federal government and fund them properly to just deliver first class mail. If they do anything else, it is on their dime.

Have you noticed that problems and their solutions are never really as simple as you wish they were?

True for the USPS, too. This is true of the USPS. There are those who want to control and close down the USPS to allow private businesses to consume the USPS and earn all those juicy profits. The USPS can and should be selling print at home or small business postage without a third party involved. These congress and senate members have hobbled the USPS with regulations while not taking responsibility for allowing the USPS to remain solvent.

There are many more layers of trouble, mostly outside influences, for the USPS. - IMO, either the USPS should be returned to be a part of our federal government (like the rest of the world treats their national postal systems) or set completely free of outside regulations to operate like a business. Unfortunately, operating on their own Profit/Loss basis would eventually eliminate deliveries to addresses/locations that are regularly 'unprofitable' - all of rural America. (FedEx and UPS have both declined to take on the full responsibilities of the USPS to deliver to all addresses in the USA - and protectorates!)

Just the usual receiving of other people's mail.
But that has been going on since I was a kid living in my parents home 50 years ago.

Have you noticed that many of the deliveries from Amazon that were delivered by UPS are now coming through the USPS. That is slowing them down on the delivery end and I am not sure about the shipping end and the sorting end.
The USPS has always been in financial trouble, as long as I can remember. Maybe now it has caught up with them.

I live in Cary and have experienced missing mail, 3 times my doctor tried to send me a prescription through the mail and it never arrived. I am also receiving a lot of other peoples mail, and when I write on the envelop wrong address and stick it in the mail box it comes right back to me.

If it has a mini bar code printed on the envelope you need to obliterate that.
The mail sorters send it right back to the carrier (route/delivery person) based on that bar code.

I believe the pandemic is mostly to blame but the new chief is trying to cut back on the major money they are losing in the cost of providing service. You can't cut expense without impacting some services. I hope they get it worked out soon.

you should track your packages it is a joke what they do I had a package from ky go to Cincinnati, to Rochester, to Buffalo, to Lehigh valley pa, to Philadelphia Pa, to south Jersey, back to Rochester, back to Buffalo, than held for two days before delivery. that's what holds up the mail.
