Recommended alcohol is 60%.

CDC recommends greater than 60 percent ethanol or 70 percent isopropanol.

If that's true, and I'm not saying it isn't, why was Purell with a high alcohol being pushed as the hand sanitizer of choice?

Because hand sanitizers with less than 60% ethanol or less than 70% isopropanol will not reliably inactivate/kill the virus.

However, hand washing with soap and water is preferable. It is at least as effective as hand sanitizers, and will kill additional germs (for example, anaerobic bacteria like the one that causes C. diff) that hand sanitizers do not kill.

Soap is all you need. Breaks down the protein structure of the virus. The link is from NatGeo. There are many other articles on the soap subject. No need for overkill although, I spray down my masks with Cavacide...both sides. Used Cavacide, initially, for all hard and high-touch surfaces at home. Mostly ended the sterilization process. Need those "good" microbes to assist in keeping the immune system functional. Yep! Was like using a sledgehammer but now just taking standard precautions. Still have plenty of Cavacide for 'Round 2'.......

Will indeed "kill" the virus. But again, will not kill anaerobes, which are very likely colonizing a facial mask that is worn more than once. Just sayin'....

That is good advice for cloth masks.

ISO alcohol is more effective against lipid encased RNA viruses at 70% as the 90% has insufficient water content to kill the outside shell and the inside RNA.
Read:

How much water (distilled or tap) should I add to my quart of 91% ISO alcohol?
And 21% is not the answer. How many ounces per quart is.

Corona Virus dies at 132.8 degrees F. Put the masks in medium to large cooking pot and cover with enough water to cover. Add one to two tables spoons of dish soap and heat until it is steaming (does not have to boil). Turn off and let them get to room temperature. You can hand rinse to get soap out or just wash them with your clothes and dry in the dryer or hang up. The heat kills the virus.....the soap gets the mask clean...and the soap can also kill the virus by stripping its protective lipid layer the is covering the RNA. This goes quickly and gets the masks clean and virus free with that combination of heat and soap.

Thanks for this information. I start by hand washing with dish soap, rinse in hot water and then pour a kettle of boiling water over them then let drip dry. My masks have gone through at least a dozen washing and except for color fade, they are holding up well.

Per this article: https://www.healthline.com/health/how-long-does-coronavirus-last-on-surfaces
the maximum period of time for which the virus can survive on any surface is 7 days.

I have 2 masks which I use for my weekly grocery store trips only. So I reuse a mask once every 2 weeks.

Thanks for the response. With all the talk of washing I figured if you need to use a mask, why not have seven. If you use one a day each one only gets used once a week. No special washing.

Ignorant? You disagree with my statement that hand sanitizers do not kill anaerobes?
I suggest you Google that before calling someone else "ignorant".

I read that washing with soap and water is best, but when not available then use hand sanitizer.
