The purpose of a mask is to keep you and others safe, but if the mask is dirty, that's no good. I don't like the idea of putting masks in the washing machine, but an online article suggested cleaning them in the dishwasher. You have a combination of very hot water, soap, and high-pressure spray. I'm going to try it with the next load.

Most washers and dryers have a sanitize cycle.

I have some hand sanitizer spray that I spray on masks from time to time.

I think the heat from the clothes dryer would be pretty effective.

I sure am glad I'm retired. I'd hate be going to work through all of this or getting ready to return to work. In our current situation, people are the enemy.

Corona Virus dies at 132.8 degrees F. Put the masks in medium to large cooking pot and cover with enough water to cover. Add one to two tables spoons of dish soap and heat until it is steaming (does not have to boil). Turn off and let them get to room temperature. You can hand rinse to get soap out or just wash them with your clothes and dry in the dryer or hang up. The heat kills the virus.....the soap gets the mask clean...and the soap can also kill the virus by stripping its protective lipid layer the is covering the RNA. This goes quickly and gets the masks clean and virus free with that combination of heat and soap.

Yes Jerry. Two things that kill it are heat and steam, other than sanitizers.

Looking at how much is caught by the lint filter, I’m fairly certain that using using the clothes dryer would cause the mask to become slightly less effective over time.

My wife hand washes them after every use, and then air dries them.

How long will the virus live on a mask if you do nothing?

Soaps and detergents kill viruses. I hand wash my masks and hang them to dry. If worried, running them in the dryer until hot will kill any viruses or bacteria on them.

I read somewhere that washing the mask in Rubbing Alcohol kills the virus and the mask dries quickly. I forget the percentage of alcohol it needs to be.

I prefer my alcohol to be 90 proof.

If that's true, and I'm not saying it isn't, why was Purell with a high alcohol being pushed as the hand sanitizer of choice?

As Covid19 is not alive how can you kill it? I accept that you might be able to destroy it - but not kill it.
