My health issues have basically killed my photography. It's been over a year since I took a photograph with my 'proper' gear... At some point, I will see about selling some of the camera stuff, but that isn't my current worry. I have had the Adobe 'photographers package' right from the very beginning, but I really do not need to be paying every month for it any more. I know it's not a lot, but it now seems to be a waste.

My biggest concern is, what happens to my existing collection of photos, if I quit the subscription? Not storage - they are all on my PC, not in the cloud. I have thousands of photos, mostly CR2 or dng formats.

Will I be able to still access them if needed, once I cut the cord with Adobe?

Thanks in advance.

I agree with DNGallagher, the images are on your computer and you will not lose them. I also believe that when you quit Adobe the LR program will remain on your computer and will no longer receive updates but you will still be able to use it for accessing your images and for adding new images, but you will no longer be able to do anything other than simple edits. Maybe some one else on UHH that has quit Adobe can elaborate more on the ability to continue some form of LR use.

You might want to look into Serif’s “Affinity Photo”. It lists for under $50, and comes with lifetime license and lifetime updates. It may not have everything Photoshop has, but pretty darn close. www.affinity.serif.com. They also have Affinity Designer (an equivalent to Illustrator) and Affinity Publisher (an equivalent to InDesign). They are constantly adding features to the programs, and the three programs are integrated to each other allowing for a seamless workflow. Very powerful programs. All three have received Apple awards.

I'm sorry to hear about your condition. Everything wears out.

From what I understand, it's best to make sure everything you have in the cloud should be brought back "home." As long as data is saved to multiple devices, you're safe.

I would also like to eliminate the Adobe expenses, but my over 30K photos are also keyworded. I have only ever used Lightroom and never even touched Photoshop even though I have the total package. All of my editing has been done in Lightroom, including post processing and keywording. Is there any way to perserve the keywords and post processing of the photos that I would download or backup to another source? I do have backups of the photos so they will not be lost, but I would love to keep the keywords and post processing of them outside of Adobe as well.

If you export your edited images, every image will have the keywords in the metadata. I don't use Bridge much, but I believe it will recognize the keywords. And it's free.

Also, the keywords in the metadata can be used in Windows File Explorer searches, and keywords can be edited, added, and subtracted. Don't use Mac, but I would expect they would have something similar.

In Windows, right-click on an image file in Explorer. In the resulting dialog, click on the "Details" tab. Windows calls the keywords "Tags".

I did the same thing about six months ago (dropped the subscription). Adobe does have Bridge that is free and can access your photos. That's what I'm doing - using Bridge with Photoshop Elements (15) for my editing. I've been very pleased after making the switch and learning Adobe Bridge was relatively painless. Take care & ...

Sorry to hear about your health issues. Since you have your RAW format on your local drive you should be able to access them. Location is the key. Lightroom Classic's catalog is probably what you are concerned about. I myself load my images into specific folders and point LR there to import. As long as you know where the images are your good.
There are free apps that read raw files. Rawthrapee is one. You did not mention your OS. Do some internet searching. I shoot Nikon and still use their free apps for renaming images etc. I am sure Canon has apps. I also have Photoscape, GIMP as well as native windows apps. Lots of choices. Recheck your pricing on adobe too. There was a special to get a free month by just reviewing your options.

No. I, fortunately, exported all of my photos before I quit. Deciding later I wanted to look at what I had done to one of them, I launched LightRoom, and voila — it brought me to a “renew your subscription” screen and refused to go any further.

You will not lose your photos. Download FREE FastStone ImageViewer. It opens almost all formats, certainly CR2 & CR3.
Here's a link: https://www.faststone.org/FSIVDownload.htm

Good luck,
Mark

You will still be able to view your photos using the library module. Although the other modules will be disabled, so no editing.

It will continue to work for 30 days however.

You could however by a used program from eBay such as Lightroom 6 and still you zip and an older version of Adobe Photoshop. Or you could, as others have mentioned, buy another editor, or use a free one like fastsone image viewer which had some basic editing capability, and not to bad for free.

You will be able to edit metadata, print and export, but the Develop and Map modules will be disabled.

And that is why I will never pay Adobe Ransom monthly. Get yourself an old copy of CS6, which you keep and use forever, then you can still open any Photoshop file. If you have them in your folders on your HD, they are yours and you will always be able to access them.
