i know how that feels. When I upgraded my desktop computer, I thought the Geek Squad would move all the photos too. They didn't. I threw up. I never got them back.

One more reason that my wife (of 52 years) and I don't share computers, phones, SD cards or anything like that. I won't list what we do share (!) but certainly not hard drives.

Ditto!

Where - how - were they hidden?

I have found that some post processing programs will attach their own tag to the file, not just a jpeg or tiff. Some of these tags are not recognized by windows and will not even show as being on the computer. I have a CD right now that has about 680 mb of files indicated by the computer but only about 40 photos show up. I know those files are not 17,000 mb each. I'm not too worried about what isn't showing because I always keep originals on multiple external hard drives. I think these were shots I backed up on a CD because I was giving them to someone. Whenever I used to do that, I would make an extra copy in case the disk was lost. Yesterday I was going through some files that windows would not recognize but when I opened them with Paintshop they came up and I saved them in jpeg. Computers can be very frustrating at times but just think what we would do without them.

It proves that you are only human. I hope you recover soon from the shock.

Look no further than your ex wife. It is too much of a coincident that your photos are gone and no hers.Women are very vindictive in these situations. After all she is your ex wife correct?

I know that feeling. I'm so glad you found them! I know I'm sounding suspicious, but may you could put a password on your hard drives?

Try using cloud backup. It is not that expensive.

Iโ€™m glad you found them. I use my local HD, an External HD, I back all important images to DVD. In addition to that I Pay for iDrive Cloud back up, free automatic backup to Google Photos & as an Amazon Prime Member my images are backed up to their Cloud service also. Knock on wood I have CDโ€™s of my files from 20 years backed are that are totally recoverable. And something as important as your Sonโ€™s becoming a Marine should be printed in a book or album.
