Do you use dropbox. It will erase all the files or groups if you want to take out of dropbox.
Looking for folders misplaced is a good start. A little much of an after thought I use multiple
WD external drives. Could they be in a Cloud service you use. Good luck.

Do not try to put anything on the drive. What might be is damage to the drives internal directory of files - you do not want that to be over-written. If you have a hard drive service firm locally, they may be able to download to a different hard drive. I would suggest a SSD. Good luck.

Today's cloud service is very reliable. I back up my photos to an external drive, as well as using Carbonite that automatically backs up all my files (except system files and program files) to the cloud. The plan I am on will backup all internal and external drives attached to one PC. In my case, that's a total of about 12TB in total. It's well worth the $9.99 a month that I am paying.

Get that extra external hard drive and backup your backups! I have five external hard drives. I bought the last two because the first three were close to capacity (hard to believe!) but they included other files in addition to photos; the last two I bought are only for photos

I'm so glad I read your post. I was missing 87,000 photos dating back to 2000, so I looked in an old backup folder and found the. Thanks!

Download "Everything" - it's free - then use that software to search your hard drive(s) as well as external backup drives. Use the beginning of a file name you might have used, or a date. The first time Everything runs it has to search through all your files which may take a few minutes. I lose files all the time and rely on Everything. It's safe to use I've been using it for around 10 years with no problem.

I'm very happy that you found your files. I would react the same way you did.
After you verify that all your files are there , take a moment to just be happy you found them.
Then make a plan so you never go through this again.
One of the simplest things you can do as a failsafe, and also as a way to enjoy your best pictures is to make inexpensive books. For example, Your son's Marine Boot Camp pictures, Make 2 Books and give one to him. You will both enjoy them.
I keep 3 backup copies of my main library, one Home, one in my vacation home (or any location you visit often) and one portable that travels with me. The one at home goes in one of those inexpensive fire/water Safes.
I also keep an online backup of important stuff. Every couple of years I change the drives.
Hard drives are very inexpensive now. The peace of Mind is worth it.
Good Luck, do it today before the terror of losing them fades.

Bob - I truly had a knot in my stomach when I read your post, and a deep sigh of relief for you that you found your treasured images. I have 3 (yes, 3!) external drives with all photo files and folders backed up on each. I download new and processed images to the first drive, then format the other 2 drives and copy the entire contents of the first drive to the other 2 monthly. Paranoid about drive failures? Perhaps, but I can't imagine losing the images I have taken years to accumulate and some of which are truly priceless...

I would suggest the cloud storage. I found it very convenient and reliable. Try Google Photos, for example.
