Whew!!!!

I've had that experience with misplaced files in my GoodSynch backups. When it's happened I was able to recover after I determined what I had done to create the problem.

Given the nature of the photos, I'm sure you're relieved. I know I was.

Peace.

"One more reason that my wife (of 52 years) and I don't share computers, phones, SD cards or anything like that."

My wife and I don't share computers. I have three, she has two. No problems! Harry

I thought I too had lost all of my pictures on my external drive as well as my external for daily back up. It turned out that my somewhat old Mac just stopped showing all of the files and the external drives appeared empty. I restarted the computer, and all of the files were found. This happens to me quite frequently now but I know too restart the computer. Time for a new machine.

I have a similar problem with Windows 10 that happens more then a couple times and is annoying...files I working on disappear and I think they may have been deleted by mistake but are nowhere to be found.
When I shut down my computer and restart about an hour later, low and behold- they're the missing files, back in the folder I was working on.
Not a technical fix but maybe something to try if your a "Leave the Computer ON 24/7" guy...

With Win 10 doing Shut Down does NOT turn everything off or flush all the caches. It preserves some for a "quick start".
Doing a "Restart" does shut everything down and then reboot. But one guy I know says its still isn't long enough for everything to reset. So besides doing a restart daily he recommends that once a week you do a restart, then do a shut down and turn off all power either by unplugging or using the power-stripe/surge suppressor and let the machine sit totally un-powered for a time. He just goes to the bathroom or to make a cup of coffee. Then turn the power back on or plug it back in and do a startup.
Is this necessary, or does it do any good? - I don't know, he is the guru. But it can't really hurt anything as far as I can tell.

Sort of like the vitamin and mineral supplements I take. The doctor says none of them are harmful and my blood work is better than he would expect for someone with my health problems and my age. So as long as I am willing to buy them keep it up. Just remember to follow his guide lines for one of them that can have a conflict with one of my Rx meds - take one of them in the morning and the other at night 12 hours apart.

First: I'm VERY glad you found your photos.
Second: I want to add to what others have said RE backup. I'm retired now from the IT world and as a professional, I always had my clients make three backups. As another said, one of those backups must be off site - the further away the better. Myself, that third copy is on a portable hard drive. You could accept the small amt of risk to go to the cloud for the offside, but it is riskier. Bottom line, large hard drives are so cheap now, why accept the risk?
The negative is that, admittedly, it is difficult to be disciplined in making these backups. I myself am way behind. but in one trip to Europe, I take over 2K shots. I know from reading these comments, that others are even 'worse' than I am. To lose these... I'd save the carpet by shooting myself outside.
Where we live, it is not unusual to lose a house to lighting. You want the third copy off site. As for Hard drives, it is only a matter of time before it crashes - thus, two copies plus the originals inhouse. The third, offsite.
