Part of the approval process is efficacy.

The primary function of the FDA is to make sure drugs are SAFE and EFFECTIVE.

Htdroxychloroquine is an antimalarial drug that also works as a DMARD. I've been taking it for 17 years. Possible negative side effects are numerous at the relatively low therapeutic dose of 400mg/day. If there were an alternative, I would have stopped taking it years ago.

Jerry 2 days ago I received an email from the VA advising me not to self medicate.
Yesterday I received a refrigerated package from the VA.
My medications and syringes, Also instructions on medicating my self during the shut down.
No it isn't as simple as insulin, it is a new injection for trying to remove cholesterol
from my arteries. Just love being told not to self medicate but to experiment on myself
with a new medicine.
Sure hope everything comes out alright
Yes I'm from Arizona but not as dumb as certain people here

My definition of self medication is way different than that :)

Beer, Bourbon, and Vodka still seem to be relatively safe for use.

None of which are good for you if your body is fighting the virus. Alas, moderation is in order.

The wife also stated that hubby did this because trump tauted it as a cure. Oh, and she urged people to not believe anything trump says. They did and look what happend.

Although chloroquine is primarily used to treat malaria or amebiasis, it is also used off-label to treat rheumatic diseases in humans.
Chloroquine is also well known in the scientific community to have antiviral properties.
The man and woman who became ill, having heard that chloroquine phosphate is, or may be, effective against Coronavirus, took animal grade chloroquine which they had on hand, having previously used it treat the koi in their aquarium. (It is not an aquarium cleaner per se, but a treatment for fish parasites.)
They poured an unknown amount of the substance into a soda, and drank it.
Most likely they took an overdose, had a reaction to other chemicals in this animal preparation, or had an adverse reaction to the chloroquine, which is known -- like most medications -- to have side effects, potentially serious.

Chloroquine is not the same as chloroquine phosphate.

Yeah, that was very long but at least more grounded than most hysteria and myths banging around the interwebs.

As far as the vodka statement, it had to do with drinking (self medicating), but was very sarcastic and not intended as medical advice. It's an old Navy trick to ward off sickness (i.e. An excuse to drink).

I once heard Red Skelton, in one of his character's persona, state that he drank for medicinal reasons. He got sick of being sober.

He was a very intelligent and humorous man who never finished school. It is rumored that he dropped out around 8th grade.

The story has been covered by every major and local news organizations. What Jerry reported is factual.
Husband died. His wife who also ingested the same concoction was or is in critical condition in a hospital. They took doses of a product that is used for cleaning / removing algaecide from fish tanks. Google it and you will find multiple stories on the event.
