The Nikon D810 is equal to the D850 in image quality in my opinion; I have and shoot both. If budget is a consideration, I would get a used D810 with a low shutter count in “like new” condition.

So my daughter does a lot of children ‘s portraits and wants good full frame. Really likes Nikon. Is a used D750 a good choice? Totally do not know if going to mirrorless is right move or if D850 is overkill for most work Thoughts?

I do not know if you would be interested. But right now you can save a LOT of money on a FF Nikon D610.
It is really a GREAT deal. The D610 is a great Full Frame format camera.

My daughter started her own photography business a couple years ago. Started it with a D750. She now owns two D750s. Is doing well in the Pittsburgh area.

Thanks Bill, bought it yesterday. I hope that in a couple years my daughter learns to use all the functionality. Taking a pic is simple and intuitive. Knowing what you are doing is a career

I’d get an 85mm lens for portraits...

Yes, it's an excellent choice. Look for refurbished, too. The price might be similar with less use.

D750 would be all the camera she needs. After that, just lens choice depending on what suits her. If she prefers lightweight, good bokeh, a 50 & 85 or 105 prime might be all she needs for lenses.

I would get the Z6 or Z7 instead of the D750, the new lenses are better and she can still use F-mount glass also.

With all due respect, if it is your daughter taking the portraits then it should probably be your daughter who researches and decides what camera is right for her.

Just another perspective.

I do understand your point and basically agree. However, it seems to me the father may just be gathering information for her. My wife takes pictures with a point and shoot. When she wants to upgrade (or replace because I left her camera in a rental car) she always asks me for help partly because of my longer experience with photography and partly because she doesn't really want to get too involved. Since she only gets UHH second hand I'm the one who may well ask you for opinions and options. We will talk it to death and then ultimately she will make the decision which is usually lesser than I may recommend but it always works for her.

Any of the Nikon full frame cameras, with the exception of the D6XX would be more than adequate. Buy whatever you can afford. Even a D700 would be great. You can pay anywhere from $350 to $450 for a body in great shape from a retailer, and less through a private sale.

Don't know her (or your) budget but a 750 is a good choice as is almost any full frame camera you can afford. More important than the body, does she have an 85mm and/or a 50mm lens? If she has DX lenses, a Z6 is also a consideration. In the end, lens choice and shooting style have much more to do with successful portraits than full versus crop frame.

I’m a Canon lover currently with a crop sensor 60D. I’m replacing the 60D and have settled on one of two Canon cameras to replace it. The 5D Mark iv and the EOS R. Both are full frame and with excellent track records of performance and durability.

Of course part of my decision was being able to use my 6 existing EF lenses. Although both the R and the 5D do use RF lenses, the EF will work on both with a Canon made Lens adapter.

Good luck. Post your final decision to let us know.

I have a D-600 (same as 610) and D750 same great image quality but the focus is much better on the 750 especially in low light. If she has full-frame lenses the 750 is a great camera for people and squirmy kids. I just recently got a new Dx D-7500 and it's also a very nice camera maybe even better focus than the 750. If she has good Dx lenses that might be a good option. I have read that the focus on the very nice Z cameras may not be quite as fast as the dslrs are right now. That might be a consideration with photographing children, but I can't speak from first-hand experience.

Used D750 is an excellent choice. I use one as a back up to a newer camera and doubt if I will ever sell it. It is just too great to get rid of.
