I have just scanned many color slides of my children when they were young and I want to give them a photo book of the pictures for their birthdays. I have seen a few examples of this in the past but did not get any info about where to get it done.

Can any of you Hoggers give me recommendations?

There are many. Consider Shutterfly for a large, easy to use, online operation.

I use snapfish for all my printing needs - they offer great deals on products, but the shipping costs are rarely discounted...

Having done a few books, remember a few 'tips'

1) Remember to add text to the spine of the book.
2) Remember to add an image and text to the back of the book, like 'Memories from your Loving Father' or 'Photography by x,y and z'.
3) Use a variety of image sizes and page layouts through the book.
4) Spend some time adding comments about the image, the time of your lives, the subject, poetry, etc to enhance the viewing experience. But, maintain the images as the primary experience, so the text should be just a words to a sentence or few. Or, text only every few pages rather than every image.

My suggestion is to find a site you like how easy it is to use. Spend time putting together your book. I often do my own layouts in Photoshop elements as easier to resize my pictures into a shape I like. Save as a jpeg and insert as one picture on a page. Then watch for a sale to order. Don't see a sale and try to get your book done within a few day timeline.

Sites I like are Shutterfly and Picaboo. Picaboo sometimes has sales for multiple copies.

Check various sites for sizes, prices and sales. Pactice a few pages. You will like what some offer for layouts etc. I have done one on a coupon with a deadline that I hated using.

I love Shutterfly. I have made several photo books with them.

I usually get the largest book with max pages. This would cost close to $200, however I wait for a sale. The sale is typically 50% off of a book plus unlimited free pages up to the max pages...it usually runs around $40. The quality is great

I suggest you also give them an electronic copy. The younger generations like to look at screens. Also books can get lost or damaged. And they or their children might like having the ability to give copies to multiple children or grandchildren down through the generations

We have been using Shutterfly for over 10 plus years and would not think of going anywhere else. Sign up for their emails and you will get offers for Free books, free pages up to their maximum number and many other offers. Their response time is awesome and their quality is unmatched. They also have GREAT phone support with live people to talk to. If you get a book and there is anything wrong with it they have a super warranty policy and will replace it totally at their expense as well as let you keep the bad one.

I do not believe you can do better than Shutterfly. Their turn around time is very good. You also upload all of a single projects photos at one time. We have always had our sequence of photos including front and back cover determined in advance of uploading. Then I make a copy of each photo in a folder calling the folder for example "Colorado vacation 2017" then rename each and every photo starting with 0001.jpg (the front cover photo) and end with 0127.jpg (the back cover photo) for example. Then when you upload all of your photos and place them in your "bin" they can be sorted by file name and then individually placed on the pages in the correct order.

Always used apple..theirs were far superior. Still trying to find another. I don’t care for shutter fly personally. Used Mofit for calendars. They were excellent...didn’t love their book..going to try blurb. Always looking for good recommendations.

Mixbooks.com is one of the best (my opinion of course, but have been doing the coffee table style books for 15 plus years) printers online. If you are an intermediate to expert producer of photos, beware Shutterfly will do THIER form of color correction on your booked photos without you knowing how to turn these processes off - some are global and some are unique to each photo. This is a good process for snap shooters and beginners. Just be aware.....
