I think I will have nightmares of screws loosening the next time I sleep on a plane after reading this thread.... oh wait, I can't sleep on planes, so this won't be a problem.... I'll just be the guy with wide eyes, saying 'what's that?" in a loud, frenzied voice after every noise.....

Don't feel bad. I know what most of the noises are, servos and such, but still get worried. I don't sleep either. Fortunately there is usually in-air entertainment to watch.

We are more often frightened than hurt; and we suffer more from imagination than from reality.

You might also want to ask your neighbor if HE has a screw loose?

Just kidding, of course. . but, I couldn't resist! <smile>

I worked on jet and prop engines for 20 years. Not once did I encounter a loose or missing nut, bolt, screw, etc. I will say this, do not travel to Vegas alone. It is possible you might wake up in an ice filled bathtub, courtesy of that gorgeous chick that served you a drink.
Enjoy your flight. And remember, always fly in the middle of the air, not on the edges. Mountains, trees, buildings, etc. are on the edges. So stay in the middle and you'll be ok.

Spent many hours on the flight deck of an old KC-97 with my old Ziess stuffed in my kit and that old girl will still produce slides as well as it would brand new. That was some intense vibration, it could loosen the bumper on a Ford pickup. That of a jet may be of a different frequency don't know but are much less intense.

Flights are usually smooth. Once in a while flights might hit turbulences and a pilot will ask permission to fly above or around it. I have my camera equipment in a camera backpack which is well padded and store in in the overhead compartments. Don't think about vibrations. Do you feel the same way when traveling in a car going over bumpy roads and hitting potholes. Your camera equipment is the trunk or the back of an SUV and can get jostled a bit. Enjoy the flight.

In the 707 days of air travel, it was said in some of the photozines of the era that high-frequency vibrations unique to jet aircraft could loosen screws, and do other mysterious things to camera equipment. It didn't seem to be a problem with reciprocating engines. Truth, or Urban Legend?
Is it a problem today?
Just in case, I wrap my equipment in as much vibration dampening stuff...socks, sweatshirts, etc. as I can.
In the 707 days of air travel, it was said in some... (show quote)

MrBossHK is correct. Working in the space industry, with rockets that have high vibration levels, fasteners are always an issue. Just ask an astronaut how "smooth" a launch is.

But to get back to the OPs question, yes there are high frequency vibrations. But they are more attenuated these days compared to the days of the 707. Most camera bags back then were leather which did not attenuate the vibrations much. And cameras manufactures did not account for how their cameras were going to travel back in the 707 days. Present camera bags designs, camera manufacturers, and plane manufacturers have attenuated or designed such that the vibrations are not much of an issue these days.

And a very valid worry it is!

Like others I haven't heard of it happening but anything is possible! If you are doing lots of travel each year I feel that the Pelican cases are the best to use with great support for equipment inside them.

My son is a airline pilot and take his 5DIV with him and has all the parts still working. Must be the Air Bus is smoother.
