No, so I wonder how reliable his other photographic advice would be. Not only is each sunset different, but you composition and processing could also be different.

Here is a link to 1.3 billion sunset images.

Jerry, your link just proves that photos showing only sunsets (no other interesting visual elements) are in the category "seen a few, seen 'em all"! 😊

He's way of the mark. Sunsets look different everywhere you go. Toward the equator the sun sets almost vertically and quickly - here in the U.K. (further North than all of the U.S. with the exception of Alaska) it's a more laboured affair and within the polar circles it can take3 months.

Seascape sunsets look different to landscape sunsets, and Scottish Island ones (clear seas) are different to those of the Norfolk coast where seas are shallower and muddier.

If YOU want to take sunsets go and do it. Look for the little nuances and prove him wrong.

I think that it depends on what else is in the photo besides the sun that makes it worthwhile or not. The setting, the exposure, the framing... etc.

What interest one might not interest or hold interest for another. Some love street/people photography. Some only take photos to record memories & are not out for that one dynamic (or a whole bunch of) photo that someone look at over & over. Some like there pics more natural while others like adding a art or paint type finish to them. I like sunset/sunrise pics & just being out in nature. Sometimes I won't take the shot if there is not enough cloud action or color. Sometimes I'll take the shot if its not that good just to try & Make something out of it in post. What is important to you? Do you like them( & photography ) enough to take the pics again when you see one you like? If so , do so.

It may not be the sunset itself but what's the scene in front of you ? Who is in it or what is there to make it interesting, there is the art.

In a word NO all sunsets are not alike
Different locations
Different clouds
All lending to experience a different sunset

I think your friend has quite living. If you can't look at a new sunrise or sunset and not find something wonderous in it, what is left in life.

It is like saying if you have seen a few trees, why look at trees anymore and if you have seen a few attractive people why would you have any interest in people anymore.

I hope you continue to pursue you interest in sunrises and sunsets and not let your friends comments impact you joy.

I get to take sunset photos at the beach on Long Island and it is something that I really enjoy. I am also getting into photographing the moon. I just bought a Sigma 150-600 lens from B&H for these endeavors.

Most sunsets from amateurs like me are taken for the color. A well composed sunset includes other features to make for a strong composition. Otherwise you just have the color pop and that’s it.

I don't agree at all. Sunsets are different in different parts of USA and the world, for example, I've seen the best sunsets from FL, NY very different. It depends on the photographer also and there knowledge of shooting sunsets.

You haven't seen them all, but a lot are the same. Shoot to make it unique.
In a photo contest I entered, the winner (not me) was a sunset, and the judge made the comment
that he does not usually select sunsets, but the winner's shot was a different take on the genre.

I do not agree with the photographer that you spoke with, I think he is wrong IMHO. But everyone is entitled to their own view and likes or dislikes.

That being said, I never tire of seeing sunset photos, especially when they are taken from places I have never been to, and I might never see otherwise. Even images taken at the same place, in different seasons, and different weather conditions are not the same each time they are taken.
