Unfortunately that is true. I think some of the responsibility lies with Nikon, which has developed their own language, a language which must be learned.
For example, I had a misunderstanding yesterday with a well-informed Nikon user. I used the term 'AF', meaning 'something capable of auto focusing', and he heard 'a lens which uses screw-drive and is therefore dependent on a body's auto focus motor', because of this language difference.
You are absolutely correct. But, I don't think it is limited to Nikon. We only have 26 letters to work with and more and more we depend on abbreviations. I get emails sometimes from much younger relatives and I have no clue what they are talking about. I'd be afraid to switch camera brands for fear I wouldn't understand the user's guide.
