From Nikon website:
*Full AF/AE supported when using FX or DX AF-S Type G/D/E, AF-P type G/E, AF-I type D and AF-S / AF-I Teleconverters.

B&H Photo also explains:

D lenses are manual focus only on any Z model.
Important are the three letters at the beginning. “AF-D” are manual focus. In any other context, not so much. Such is the FUD wrought by Nikon labeling.

You will never see AF-D on a Nikon lens. If it is a "D" lens the "D" appears at the end of the description, after the aperture. AF, AF-S, AF-P appear at the beginning of the lens description on the lens barrel. They couldn't be placed further apart, probably because they are unrelated.

The problem is people don't read what's on the lens, but prefer to get their information from the internet.

Blame Nikon. Their lens naming system is confusing. Or Ken Rockwell. If one Googles FTZ and D lenses it pulls up a Ken Rockwell paragraph that says, to paraphrase, AF-D lenses will be MF with the FTZ. Easy to confuse that to mean all D lenses. I assume what it really means is AF as compared to AF-S, AF-I and AF-P and has nothing to do with the "D".

By making a mistake I was corrected and learned something new. So don't be so hard on people who misunderstand something.

but if you look at the B&H site, they still have some “AF-D” lenses for sale, and then a note at the end saying that these will not auto focus on lower tier cameras without a AF motor in the body. These will also not auto focus on this adaptor. True “information from the web” for those of us who have no reason to own the relevant lenses.

Here is where the lack of knowledge comes in, added to seeing what you want to see.

B&H accurately states that a lens will not auto focus on a specific cameras. Did they say it had anything to do with the "D"? No.

Take a look at this "D" lens. It is an AF-s lens that also happens to be a "D" lens. It auto focuses just fine on my Z6. Take note that on the lens the "D" is no where near where it says "AF-s".

https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/186250-USA/Nikon_1960_AF_S_Zoom_Nikkor_17_35mm.html

Once all lenses became "D" lenses they dropped the "D" and went on to use that place holder for the letter "G", which indicates no aperture ring. Once all new lenses lacked an aperture ring an "E" began to appear there, indicating electronic aperture.

It wouldn't be expected of people not interested in these lenses to research these things. But without the knowledge it is better to ask questions than make incorrect statements.

Your example is not labeled “AF-D” - the only label I am talking about. B&H says this about every “AF-D” lens they sell. Are they wrong? Will these lenses auto focus on a D5600 body?? Will a lens labeled “AF-D” focus on the FTZ adapter???

Nikon did not label their lenses AF-D. If this doesn't make it clear, nothing will.

Nikon’s lens naming system is only confusing to those who don’t care enough, or don’t have the capacity, to educate themselves.

Looking for the term "AF-S" will solve nothing. Looking for "AF-D" will.

B&H seems to have changed their labeling since I did my search before posting on this thread, but they still say "Autofocus is not supported by DSLRs lacking an autofocus motor, such as the D3000-series, D5000-series, D40, D40X, and D60, where the lens may be used with manual focus only."
https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/247091-USA/Nikon_2137_Normal_AF_Nikkor_50mm.html/overview

I would not try using this lens with the FTZ adapter.

I fully understand AF-D does not exist, but here on BHPhoto might be why there is still confusion. BHPhoto has resulted to abbreviations and slang. Not good.

I'll never understand why anybody thinks B&H is an "authority" on anything at all. They are merely a retailer looking to maximize profit. Petiod.

Yeah, B&H just changed their labeling.

But what you should be looking at is what is says on the lens.

They seem to have changed lens descriptions over night - maybe others will follow. The important thing in this discussion is that FTZ adapter requires a lens which has its own AF motor. Anything else is just words.
