Interesting video from Scott Kelby about switching to Capture One ...

That was a very interesting video. Thanks. A friend of mine is a long time Photoshop and Lightroom user, and very very good at using them. He recently moved to capture one and I asked him how he liked it. He is a Fuji user, and said that capture one is very similar to Lightroom But doesn’t replace Photoshop. So what he does is use capture one and then for final edits moves back to Photoshop.

I asked him why doesn’t he just stick with Lightroom, and he said he has discovered that he can sharpen images better in capture one then he can in Lightroom with Fuji raw files. I don’t know that for a fact but I am just passing that on.

I tried Capture One software and was very disappointed. First, their tutorials are too fast and I had to replay these tutorials several times to get the information. Second, the software is not intuitive and is difficult to comprehend. Eventually I gave up and went to On1 and the sky opened. This software package is everything that Capture One is not. I am very happy with On1.

Greetings,
I am not here to bash Capture One as I was pretty happy with their software performance since version 9.
I am just sharing a disappointing experience I had with them lately, and hope this might save some of you $$ and grief with their upgrade policy.
Here is my story: I upgraded to CO12 Pro at end of September 2019 (for $127 after discount). Less than two months later they came out with version CO20 asking me to pay another $159 or $20 for monthly subscription (way much more than Adobe) for the new version at what they call upgrade discount!!
Contacted their Customer service asking for a prorate discount towards the new version which they flatly refused. I am sure they knew they are releasing a new version when I bought my upgrade to CO12 PRO. I explained them that the upgrade their offered me would ultimately cost me a total of $286 while buying a totally new version would cost $299! Does this make sense?

What we learn from here:
1. If you use their SW, time your upgrades properly otherwise will end up paying way too much in order to use the latest upgrade.
2. Check their claim to being a lower cost than Adobe. (in my view is no longer true).
3. Personally I will make as much mileage of the version 12 I have and for any new projects I am switching to Corel Paint Shop Pro 2020. ( It does everything I need for a much cheaper upgrade price)

I had the same experience. I had just purchased C1 Ver. 1.2 a month before C1 Ver. 2 came out. In fact I was still trying to get the bugs out of Ver. 1.2 when Ver. 2 was released. No discount on uprade or even a concern that they've essentially screwed me!!

I definitely won't be upgrading to Ver. 2 and am still having problems with Ver. 1. Good bye Capture One; one company I won't be dealing with in the future!

As it is, Capture One is overpriced for what it does; another reason to part company.

I sympathize with the pricing situation complaints. On the other hand.... (there's always an other hand)

If you get into the CaptureOne universe early in the release year - like early to mid-December - and stay there you renew every late fall for about $129. A little over $10 per month. In my opinion, that's a fair price. You don't have to renew every year to get the renewal price, you can skip a year. I renewed from C1-12 to C1-20, but I have to say this is not a major update year. Going from C1-11 to C1-12 was a major update.

Capture One folks have a weird pricing strategy, I agree, but it's consistent. It does not change from year to year, so once you have signed on it's pretty easy to control the price and stay up to date.

Whether C1 is right for you is obviously a personal decision. I love it. I know one poster said it's not intuitive. I think it is very intuitive although it's not like PS or LR. But I don't like LR at all, and only use PS when there's no alternative. But to each his/her own.

I pay a bargain price of $9.99 per month for the very best photo editing software on the planet and it includes all of the latest technology in upgrades. I can access YouTube videos for instruction on anything I care to learn about those programs. I have had the Photographer's Plan for years and I am paying the same price as when it started. If I purchased the upgrades for any other editing and organizing software, it wouldn't be as good and would end up costing far more. I am very pleased with Adobe!

Yup, I've tried a lot of other software packages and keep coming back to Lightroom/Photoshop for general postprocessing; however, I do really like Affinity Photo and Luminar 4 for their specialty features.

I have not had problems with Capture One updates, for whatever reason. I get them free from Nikon. That said, I only use Capture One to open the NEF (RAW) files and then process them in Luminar. It may or may not have been a post from Steve Parry that said this was the way to retain all the proprietary info that Nikon puts in their NEF files.

Luminar continues to be the only PP program I use. And, while I have downloaded Luminar 3 a while back, I still use the 2018 version. It works just fine. Maybe I am just being Stone Age, but I haven't had a reason to move up.

I initially started with Luminar 2018, then upgraded to Luminar 3, and now use Luminar 4. The AI filters in Luminar 4 are pretty impressive. You might want to download a free trial of Luminar 4 and check it out.

I have had similar problems with various companies. Now days they all have a facebook page and have people whose job is to oversee any complaints. I've used their various facebook pages and also comsumer affairs. Both places have gotten me satisfaction after putting a less than stellar review on both forums. Bad reviews will cost them money and they know that. Sounds like the company should upgrade at no charge if it was a recent transaction. Good luck.

I had never used Luminar before Ver. 4. It doesn't replace Lightroom (or Photoshop), at least for me, but does some specialty things very well!

If the upgrade isn't offering new features that I think would be extremely useful for me, I simply don't upgrade. Even if the upgrade would be beneficial, the price for upgrade must be acceptable. If not, no deal!

I'm sorry to hear that. $127 and then $159 is not good. "Subscription" is even worse. One advantage of the non-Adobe programs was them buying outright. I never want to get stuck with subscription software, but no company ever makes enough profit, so making everyone pay every month is the trend for the future.

I've been using PS/LR since they lowered the price to $10/mo. I have paid less for my subscription in the past 5 yrs than I paid for the last upgrade to CS6. If this is what being stuck feels like, bring it on - I love the price, quality, and the fact that it is always up to date. And I really like not having to pay for updates every 12 months - which is nothing but a "subscription" in sheep's clothing - that is if you like to stay current. Soon enough other companies will see the light - not having to support a "forever" license is a big savings. And it makes for a more flexible software delivery platform. That is the real advantage - not the "buy-it-outright option. I couldn't be happier.

Keep in mind that C1 has its roots in the tethered/medium format world. People who have been using it for years have been working with Phase One backs, Mamiya Leaf cameras, Hasselblad cameras, etc. So yes, it does have a more involved workflow if you need it. But their "auto adjust" modes are excellent.

It's only non-intuitive because it is unfamiliar. I use LR, PS, C1, DXO Photolab, On1 Raw - none of these were intuitive the first few times I used them. They are all pretty fast, have slick interfaces, and once you learn their syntax, they become very intuitive.

Three thing that don't last long:
1. Dogs chasing cars
2. Pros putting for pars
3. Companies that abuse their customers.

If one shoots tethered, C1 is THE tool. It leaves LR in the dust for that function. No drops, no having to restart the program...it just works. The way is treats skin tones is also excellent.

It is true that the tools and language are different from Adobe, but as Gene51 indicated, once one gets used to it, it is find. Kinda like switching between Nikon, Canon, and Sony—just different philosophy on how to get to the same end.

C1 is great software but their pricing policies are just crap. After some computer problems I had to download version 9 a couple of times and because of that I was asked to pay the full price to get into version 12.
