Vote with your feet.
I'll NEVER support a program requiring a subscription.
I have a forever license for the programs I currently use
And won't require anything more until well after I am dead.
Micros--it office 365 included. -- = it

I have not had problems with Capture One updates, for whatever reason. I get them free from Nikon. That said, I only use Capture One to open the NEF (RAW) files and then process them in Luminar. It may or may not have been a post from Steve Parry that said this was the way to retain all the proprietary info that Nikon puts in their NEF files.

Luminar continues to be the only PP program I use. And, while I have downloaded Luminar 3 a while back, I still use the 2018 version. It works just fine. Maybe I am just being Stone Age, but I haven't had a reason to move up.

You are referring to Nikon Capture software. This thread is about Phase One's Capture One software.
Similar name different company.

You - if you want your software to be current, buy new cameras, computers, lenses etc every now and then. Eventually, like everything else, it will stop working. It's not a matter of if, but when. Your happiness is only temporary.

True as there ain't nobody gettin' outa this life alive - - but as I'm hardwired into 'the good place', I'm not really concerned about that.

I still have a computer I built back in the '90s that runs Windows 3.11 as well as Ami Pro. Some things never stop working <LOL>
I built my current computer in 2015. As preventive maintenance I replaced the system drive earlier this year, and am ready to replace the 12TB Raid5 data cluster shortly. Hopefully I can keep this box running for longer than I am.

I think I have a laptop that looks like your 90s vintage computer. However, I can't imagine trying to use it for anything, even internet browsing. My smartphone, smartwatch and other portable devices are considerably faster and they run better software than what was available for Win3.11.

FWIW, RAID 5 is not all that. A striped/mirrored set, with dual redundant drives - is faster and safer. Read up on RAID 1+0. Question - why did you install only 16 gb ram and opt to run a 120 gb scratch drive? Your system would be faster if you increased the memory to 32gb, and you'd find that the scratch drive would rarely be used.

Ah, so that's it. I should have checked the icon on my tool bar. That would have told me I had the wrong program in mind. Thanks for setting me straight!

I'm somewhat familiar with RAID-5 foibles as the drive size increases - but I back things up fairly regularly to my 16TB NAS (which backs itself up to another 12TB RAID 5 box) and did not have room nor $$ to construct a 12TB RAID-10 cluster inside the box. As you saw - my system drive is 2x512GB SSD in RAID-1.
16 GB RAM seemed to be plenty in 2015 - as my system does not host simultaneous multiple users.
As to why the 120 GB swap drive - dunno - just seemed to make sense at the time - deconflicting data lanes for simultaneous reads and writes? I only assign 32 GB for the Windows Swap file and use the rest for multiple other storage functions (scratch file for image and video processing, etc)

Yes I had a very similar experience with them in 2015. Add to it that I bought a new camera and it was not supported by the C1 version I had purchased and I had to pay for the upgrade to get support for my new camera. Meanwhile Adobe sent out a free update that included my new camera. I dropped C1 and purchased the Adobe Photographers Plan. I have been happy with that decision.

You're smart.

So there are a lot of people here who are happy using what they have been using for a while and that’s fine. Different people have different needs, and that’s fine, too.

When the Adobe subscription model began I was reluctant to sign up for a continuing fee. But after looking around to see what else was out there I was not finding anything I felt comfortable with. So when I felt that it was time to update the S/W I went for the subscription. It turns out that it is the cheapest alternative.

The $9.99/month (plus tax) is not financially onerous and what I get is top of the line. I consider LR to be an OK editor but an excellent DAM, and since PS is included I haven’t found anything that beats it.

Nothing is static, particularly in software, so eventually there will be something better out there. I don’t think that time has come yet. And of course “better” is subjective so there will still be room for discussion on the subject.
