I am not here to bash Capture One as I was pretty happy with their software performance since version 9.
I am just sharing a disappointing experience I had with them lately, and hope this might save some of you $$ and grief with their upgrade policy.
Here is my story: I upgraded to CO12 Pro at end of September 2019 (for $127 after discount). Less than two months later they came out with version CO20 asking me to pay another $159 or $20 for monthly subscription (way much more than Adobe) for the new version at what they call upgrade discount!!
Contacted their Customer service asking for a prorate discount towards the new version which they flatly refused. I am sure they knew they are releasing a new version when I bought my upgrade to CO12 PRO. I explained them that the upgrade their offered me would ultimately cost me a total of $286 while buying a totally new version would cost $299! Does this make sense?

What we learn from here:
1. If you use their SW, time your upgrades properly otherwise will end up paying way too much in order to use the latest upgrade.
2. Check their claim to being a lower cost than Adobe. (in my view is no longer true).
3. Personally I will make as much mileage of the version 12 I have and for any new projects I am switching to Corel Paint Shop Pro 2020. ( It does everything I need for a much cheaper upgrade price)

That's really a shame; the upgrade/pricing aspect, I mean. Even though I'm a long time --and very happy-- Ps/Lr user, after using C1's 'freebie' dedicated Fuji C1-lite (I shoot Fujis sometimes, obviously) for some time, I d/l-ed an eval copy --knowing its full potential wasn't available in the unpaid/unsubscribed version-- of their standard package and found it potentially very worth looking further into with other camera maker's (in my case, Nikon) raw image files. What initially dissuaded me was their standard pricing structure, and now that you've outlined their 'upgrade' costs, I guess they're completely off my list. Thanks for the straight skinny.

Its like going out to dinner somewhere 'nice.' I don't mind paying for a really good meal, but I need to walk out #1) being fed, and #2) not feeling like I just bought a thousand shares in 'Joe's Diner' while my stomach tells me I'm still hungry.

Yes I had a very similar experience with them in 2015. Add to it that I bought a new camera and it was not supported by the C1 version I had purchased and I had to pay for the upgrade to get support for my new camera. Meanwhile Adobe sent out a free update that included my new camera. I dropped C1 and purchased the Adobe Photographers Plan. I have been happy with that decision.

It's simpler than that. I have CO Pro 12 and reviewed version 20 to discover that all changes are largely cosmetic, so I skipped that version.

Keep version 12 and be happy with that... by the end of this year, we'll see what version 21 brings.

What is in the upgrade that need or want? Does the software do what you want now? Only purchase if there is something they added that makes it worth it or the old version doesn't support a new camera purchase. Just MHO.

I'm not worried about that... I manage systems which use jurasic software which is dated 20 years ago. All I have to do is create another virtual machine with the right OS.

I'm sorry to hear that. $127 and then $159 is not good. "Subscription" is even worse. One advantage of the non-Adobe programs was them buying outright. I never want to get stuck with subscription software, but no company ever makes enough profit, so making everyone pay every month is the trend for the future.

I pay a bargain price of $9.99 per month for the very best photo editing software on the planet and it includes all of the latest technology in upgrades. I can access YouTube videos for instruction on anything I care to learn about those programs. I have had the Photographer's Plan for years and I am paying the same price as when it started. If I purchased the upgrades for any other editing and organizing software, it wouldn't be as good and would end up costing far more. I am very pleased with Adobe!

I've been there and agree 100%. I really like the software but frustrating.
It supports the Nikon Z6 and purchased the Z50 and have to pay the $159 upgrade
to use the software.

"Get Stuck".....Really Gerry? According to this testimony the user paid more in the first three month than I paid for Lr (and Photoshop) in the first two years. I got the industry standard and all the updates for not one cent more. Less than the monthly cost of Amazon Prime. Please stop whining and just sign up my friend. Best of luck.
