All this airy fairy nebulous stuff is horse feathers.

It's easy to tell if a photo is good or not.

If you enjoy looking at it, (or if it holds your attention if it is a documentary or commercial work) it is good.
If you look at it and immediately go to the next image it's bad.

Its not quite as simplistic as you make it out to be and not horse feathers at all. If you enjoy looking at an image and it holds your attention chances are its because the photographer understood proper composition and all that it involves.

Imagine your photography as if you approached every image as if it were your last.

That's unfair for 2 reasons:

1. learners come here for instruction, guidance etc.

2. The best togs here are at least the equal of the best at DPR.

Opinions vary, but thats not my experience. Point being a question was asked, and an answer provided. The work ive seen on dpreview challenges exceeds what ive seen here, by a large margin, on average. In total. Routinely. The point is to be inspired and improve. If this site does it for ya, so be it. But i dont think it does for he who asked, or he wouldnt have. Fair enough?

Now I'm confused. I was agreeing with you !

I thought you were implying I was changing the intent of the original topic.

I’ve always been a good photographer. It just took a while for others to recognize it! 🙂

I reckon PollOck is a genius and his work is exquisite.

I think the same of Photographers Edward S, Koen Demuynck et al...
It's because of their work I know I'm just a hack.

I actually like Pollack's work. I just wonder if he was ever satisfied.

May be you should, if there is a feed back. That way you may learn what 'makes a winner'. You do not have to agree with the reasoning but at least you get some information you can use later.

Yes, like take what I don't care for and it's a "winner".
I'm quite content with liking what I do and do not normally desire to enter any contests.
I like what I like, that's all I need.

No language says yes to the blatantly obvious as well as Russian...
It goes something like this:

Daaahhhhh.

And having said that, composition is only one of many elements
(that you have ignored) that make a good picture.

One may criticize the technical quality but the reality is the content cannot be criticized at all. As photographers too many things are variables.

The only thing that is not - in this case - is that this a moment in time where the kids appear unruly or more likely paying attention to someone else. This is where - as a photographer - one learns to take control first by getting rid of the 'distraction' then by engaging the kids.

Solutions:
- Mom, can you get me a glass of water, diplomatic
- Mom, please go away, less so
- Rude would be *** *** *** ****

The best solution? Engage mom.
- Can you come behind me? Once she is there make a weird noise so that the kids look straight at you w/o moving.

Chalk this under experience but at the same recognize that this image has a family value. This is why folks react positively.

Absolutely! The mom of the youngest was trying to get him to stop crying. If I REALLY wanted a better picture, I would have rearranged them first of all; then stood in front of them, with the moms behind me. We were in a very tiny and messy living room and this was a half-hearted attempt to get all the kids in one picture. Personally, I LIKE the dreamy quality; but then, I don't consider myself a GOOD photographer. Thanks for the input. Alternatively, I could turn the one boy's head (by swapping heads of another picture in this series) and add the caption, "They were enraptured with Santa Claus".

It's called the "Dunning-Kruger effect".

Simply put, someone that is incompetent

No mystery there .... But never had a
name for it. Having a name rocks, and
such a perfect name at that ! Thinking
of "Kruger", the Nazi Scientist clone in
the "Archer" spy-adventure toons. And
"Dunning" ? Self-evident. Waaaay cool !

I actually prefer this shot over a posed shot with all of them looking at you. The three kids all looking enraptured with the goings on and the one taking note of you adds some intrigue and interest. You might say all the younger ones are enraptured with Santa Claus while the oldest is giving you his "I'm onto you" look.
