Yesterday I received a used lens from MPB. It is an AF-S VR 70 to 300 G IF ED. Fed X brought the package, and the box was damaged a little bit in one corner and the tape on the bottom of the box had come half way off. This was allowing some of the contents to hang out of the box. The Fed X driver actually pointed this out to me. He also noted that box was damaged, in his delivery notes. When I opened the box with the lens in it and took it out, I saw that the clear window over the distance scale was cracked. The crack ran all the way across the window, length wise. This was a lens that was listed as like new, no damage. My question is this, how big a deal is it. I am worried about the window falling off at some point. I am worried that it might allow moisture to get into lens. What do all you Hoggers think , is it a big deal or not ? Your comments would be greatly appreciated.
You should have taken pictures of the box before opening. You should have taken pictures of every step of opening the box and inspecting the contents. Regardless of these missed documentary steps, you should now contact MPB and get a return authorization and send back the broken equipment for replacement and / or full refund.

Talk to MPB.
I have contacted MPB and sent them pictures.
Still waiting for MPB to reply.
If the driver made the proper notations and the lens was sold, by a reliable dealer, as "like new", the package was damaged enough to expose some of its contents, the damage likely occurred in transnet. It might have been dropped or impacted by heavy cargo or by some merchandise handling equipment. Any impact that was strong enough to crack that window may have damaged other internal parts of the lens.
Hopefully, the shipment was properly insured for the replacement value and you should be reimbursed for repairs or replacement of the item.
Theses occurrences are aggravating but, in the past, I have had good serve from Fed-X on the odd claim or damage issue.
Good luck!

File a claim with FedX
MPB would probably make the claim to FedX.

Im going to believe they'll take it back for a refund to you as a reputable dealer. If not if you paid by credit card you can put a hold on it while the credit card company helps resolve the dispute.

Call them, tell them what happened in detail, send them an image of the crack, and ask when can you return it. If the hit was hard enough to crack the window, how much internal damage was done. RETURN IT.
When I have gotten such pkgs as you describe. I refuse delivery because of possible damage in delivery. I’m always refunded immediately Or a replacement of equal or better Quality.

The lens was probably dropped by an original owner! No telling what other damage it might have. I would return it ASAP.
Since the packaging was heavily damaged, it's a no-brainer. Return the lens.

I've been lucky in that all the seriously damaged packages I've received have had undamaged goods inside. It all depends on how well the item is packed.
